Exotic other

A few additional geometric pathologies have been discovered over the years for the various semiempirical methods. While many are for species that might be described as exotic, others have considerably more potential to be troublesome. [Pg.151]

Live biological agents should be handled in contained areas. The level of containment should depend on the pathogenicity of the microorganism and whether it has been dassified as exotic. (Other relevant legislation, such as Directives 90/219/EEC and 90/220/EEC, also applies). [Pg.240]

Wines may be imported for reasons at either of two extremes because they are relatively inexpensive, or because they are in high demand, and thus command a higher price. Those exported from the United States tend to be the former, and those imported, the latter, based on the data shown in Table 5. There is some market, even in countries that are overproducing wine, for wines with exotic labels. This tendency illustrates another way in which wines differ from other products. Information on and cuisine from foreign countries associated with their wines serve as the vehicles for a form of a cultural exchange, besides the stricdy commercial one. [Pg.365]

Pineapple juice has been available commercially since 1932, but the production and sale of other tropical fmit juices has more recently received significant attention in Europe and, especially, in North America (24). Many tropical fmit juices are too pulpy or have harsh or exotic flavors which make 100% juice products unacceptable to most U.S. consumers. They are more acceptable as nectars containing 25—50% juice or as blended fmit drinks where their strong flavors are diluted or modified. [Pg.574]

The aromatic core or framework of many aromatic compounds is relatively resistant to alkylperoxy radicals and inert under the usual autoxidation conditions (2). Consequentiy, even somewhat exotic aromatic acids are resistant to further oxidation this makes it possible to consider alkylaromatic LPO as a selective means of producing fine chemicals (206). Such products may include multifimctional aromatic acids, acids with fused rings, acids with rings linked by carbon—carbon bonds, or through ether, carbonyl, or other linkages (279—287). The products may even be phenoUc if the phenoUc hydroxyl is first esterified (288,289). [Pg.344]

Despite the benefits of lead and lead ahoys, the use of these materials is declining rapidly, owing primarily to environmental health and safety factors. Eor many years, lead ahoys were the materials of choice for many corrosive environments, but are now being replaced by stainless steel, plastics, and exotic metals. The toxic nature of lead requires special precautions and handling not necessary with other materials. These requirements have reduced the usage of lead ahoys. [Pg.62]

Windows in airplanes, trains, and schools commonly use polycarbonate. Exotic appHcations include military use, for example in high speed aircraft canopies, where tests have shown polycarbonate to withstand impact with fowl at Mach 2. Polycarbonate is also used for security appHcations as laminates with glass or other materials. Polycarbonate offers unsurpassed projectile-stopping capabiHty, as the material softens upon impact with a bullet, absorbing the projectile s energy. [Pg.285]

Cluster emission is an exotic decay that has some commonalities with a-decay. In a-decay, two protons and two neutrons that are moving in separate orbits within the nucleus come together and leak out of the nucleus as a single particle. Cluster emission occurs when other groups of nucleons form a single particle and leak out. Several of the observed decays are shown in Table 10. The emitted clusters include C, Ne, Mg, and Si. The... [Pg.452]

PP2- However, there is an alternative theoretical mechanism by which the two Ps could be emitted without any neutriao, denoted PPq- The experimental methods that are used to look for the double P decay mode are often more sensitive to one of these decay modes than the other. The difference ia the expected energy distribution of the electrons is clear from the fact that ia the first case the total decay energy is divided between four particles, including the two antineutfinos that caimot be observed ia the second, it is only divided between the two electrons. As more exotic modes of decay are measured and even larger limits are placed on some of the half-fives, the constraints on theory become even stronger. [Pg.453]

Although the first two materials discussed in this chapter, the polyphenylenes and poly-p-xylylenes, have remained in the exotic category, most of the other materials have become important engineering materials. In many cases the basic patents have recently expired, leading to several manufacturers now producing a polymer where a few years ago there was only one supplier. Whilst such competition has led in some cases to overcapacity, it has also led to the introduction of new improved variants and materials more able to compete with older established plastics materials. [Pg.584]

ReflEXAES can be used for near-surface structural analysis of a wide variety of samples for which no other technique is appropriate. As with EXAES, ReflEXAES is particularly suited for studying the local atomic structure around particular atomic species in non-crystalline environments. It is, however, also widely used for the analysis of nanocrystalline materials and for studying the initial stages of crystallization at surfaces or interfaces. ReflEXAES was first proposed by Barchewitz [4.135], and after several papers in the early nineteen-eighties [4.136, 4.168-4.170] it became an established (although rather exotic) characterization technique. Most synchrotron radiation sources now have beam-lines dedicated to ReflEXAES experiments. [Pg.220]

Among the more exotic methods which have been used for the direct epoxidation of steroid olefins are chromic acid, ozone, e.g., (84), and photochemical oxygenation. Ozone is useful for the epoxidation of the unreactive 8,9-olefin, but the results of the other unusual methods can usually be duplicated by the methods of epoxidation discussed above. [Pg.17]

Because the plates are made of thin pressed metal, materials resistant to corrosive attack can be easily selected. Plates are standard and mass-produced,. Specific applications are dealt with by changing plate arrangements. Stainless steels, monel, titanium, aluminum bronze, and other exotic metals... [Pg.72]

Numerous other aluminacarborane structural types have also recently been synthesized by a variety of routes and, indeed, the burgeoning field of metallocarborane chemistry now encompasses the whole Periodic Table with an almost bewildering display of exotic and unprecedented structural types. [Pg.193]

L. Seglin We have heard today two rather novel approaches to methanation the steam-moderated RMProcess and the slurry methanation process. These are the results of new or recent R D. What can we visualize beyond that Would it be some other exotic process ... [Pg.170]

Modem methods for the manuf and storage of expl materials, which include many exotic chemicals, fuels, and propints, allow less space for a given quantity of expl material than previously permitted. Such concns of expls increase the possibility of the propagation of accidental explosions (one accidental explosion causing the detonation of other expl materials). It was evident that a requirement for more accurate design techniques had become essential. Ref 3 describes a rational design method to provide the required structural protection. It presents methods of design for protective construction... [Pg.60]

To sell well, the shampoo must look good, must feel thick or creamy in the hands, and must produce a nice-feeling lather. It must smell good, and it must not be too expensive. Other selling points might be the currently popular herbal extracts, or amino acids from exotic protein sources such as silk or the milk of pygmy goats. [Pg.201]
