Medical Services and First Aid Standard, requires employers to (1) ensure the ready availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on matters of health (2) in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid and adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available and (3) where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching of or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use. [Pg.148]

In auditing various industrial workplaces, we found that this particular OSHA standard is one of the most misunderstood by employers. Based on our experience, we found that OSHA s use of the words "near proximity to" and "adequate" contribute to the vagary and ambiguity of this standard. Most employers understand the need to provide first aid supplies in the workplace, but generally think that this is the extent of their responsibilities in this regard. Moreover, many workplaces do train their personnel on basic first aid and CPR, but do not require (in written job descriptions) that the trained employees respond to a workplace medical emergency. [Pg.148]

To this end soldiers are given basic first aid training to deal with themselves and colleagues, while specialist medical trained solders are embedded in the forward units, with additional first aid supplies [9, 10]. How medical services align behind... [Pg.119]

Become familiar with the location and use of standard safety features in your laboratory. All chemistry laboratories should be equipped with fire extinguishers, eyewashes, safety showers, fume hoods, chemical spill kits, first-aid supplies, and containers for chemical disposal. Any questions regarding the use of these features should be addressed to your instructor or teaching assistant. [Pg.14]

In addition to escape masks, shelters should contain air monitoring equipment to allow the determination of the level of toxic gas in the shelter atmosphere (see Section 6.2.3). Also, provision of emergency lighting and first aid supplies and equipment should be made. [Pg.144]

Onsite safety stations basically are small rooms which store some supplies for emeigency responders and serve as meeting places for in-plant people to plan shift activities. They may also contain portable gas detectors, communication gear, first aid supplies, and PPE, especially self-contained breathing apparatus. [Pg.237]

Successful treatment of severe exposures is dependent on rapid reactions by those responding to the incident and by the affected person(s). In the following sections, reference is made to various medications specific to the treatment of hydrofluoric acid exposure. It is unlikely that the typical rescue squad called to the scene will have these medications so they should be part of the first aid supplies maintained in the immediate area where exposures may occur. Have someone call for emergency medical assistance as soon as possible and direct them to arrange treatment with a physician or trauma center familiar with chemical bums. In all types of exposure, the first action recommended is prolonged flushing with copious amounts of water so an eyewash station, a shower and a source of potable water should be immediately available. [Pg.315]

First aid supplies are required to be readily available under paragraph Sec. 1910.151(b). An example of the minimal contents of a generic first aid kit is described in American National Standard (ANSI) Z308.1-1978 Minimum Requirements for Industrial Unit-Type First-aid Kits. The contents of the kit listed in the ANSI standard should be adequate for small worksites. When larger operations or multiple operations are being conducted at the same location, employers should determine the need for additional first aid kits at the worksite, additional types of first aid equipment and supplies and additional quantities and types of supplies and equipment in the first aid kits. [Pg.397]

If it is reasonably anticipated that employees will be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials while using first aid supplies, employers are required to provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Exposure to Bloodbome Pathogens standard, Sec. 1910.1030(d) (3) (56 FR 64175). This standard lists appropriate PPE for this type of exposure, such as gloves, gowns, face shields, masks, and eye protection. [Pg.397]

The first aid kit must consist of materials approved by the consulting physician in a weatherproof container with individual sealed packages for each type of item. Check the contents of the first aid kit before it is sent out on each job and at least weekly on each job to ensure that the expended items are replaced. [Pg.383]

We cannot revoke Murph/s law, but we can do a lot to minimize the damage. We can reduce the incidence of sparks and flames and flammable vapors. We can make sure that if the accident does occur, we have the means to contain the damage and to take care of any injuries that result. All of this means thinking about the laboratory environment. Does your laboratory have or enforce regulations related to important items such as eye, face, and foot protection, safety clothing, respiratory equipment, first aid supplies, fire equipment, spill kits, hoods, and compliance regulations Think ahead about what could go wrong and then plan and prepare to minimize the chance of an accident and be prepared to respond when one does occur. [Pg.5]
