In addition to complete histories of the science, several other types of general works may be noted. First, there are several volumes of collected essays that deal, mainly or exclusively, with the history of chemistry. An example of these is the published proceedings of the Symposium on Alchemy, Chemistry and Pharmacy , held during the International Congress of History of Science at Liege in 1997.28 There is also a volume of essays on the history of chemistry in the multi-volume Italian publication, Storia della scienza.29 The five-year European Science Foundation Programme, The Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939 ,30 which was launched in 1993, has resulted in a number of collections of essays on Lavoisier,31 on aspects of the chemical industry,32-35 on chemical textbooks,36 and on chemical education and institutions.37-39... [Pg.5]

Post founded the department of history and philosophy of science at what was then Chelsea College, London University, and which subsequently merged with King s College, London. He has also been one of the most influential postwar philosophers of science in Great Britain. His father, Fritz Paneth, one of the founders of radiochemistry, had a deep interest in philosophical aspects of chemistry, as can be seen in his collected essays (Paneth, 1965). [Pg.67]

The history of the universe has been one of inexorable, inevitable chemical complexification - a sequence of emergent evolutionary episodes from nucleosynthesis, to planet formation, to life. The collected essays of this volume review that epic 14 billion years of history and, in the process, touch on all of the natural sciences physics, astronomy, geology, biology and, of course, chemistry. In short, this book retells the story of the emergence of everything (i). [Pg.3]

Writers (1965). These culminated in his four-volume selection, incomplete, unannotated and unchronological (but at the time invaluable), of what he called her Collected Essays , published in 1966 and 1967. [Pg.92]

Given the abundance and diversity of available versions of Woolfs novels, this new Woolf Companion, like its predecessor, has opted not to privilege a particular edition but instead has allowed individual scholars to choose the one that seems best suited to their purposes. The only standardisation occurs with Woolf s non-fiction, where competing editions are rare and consequently there is a greater degree of consensus. These standard editions are referred to as CE1-4 Collected Essays, 4 volumes), D1-5 (Diaries, 5 volumes), Ei-6 (Essays, 6 volumes) and Li-6 (Letters, 6 volumes). It is hoped that the accessibility of on-line versions of the novels will make it straightforward for any reader using a different text to locate specific references. [Pg.292]

Of all the chemical transformations that have shaped the Cosmos since its origin 14 billion years ago, none is more remarkable than the chemical origins of life. How did the raw materials of primitive Earth - oceans, atmosphere, rocks and minerals, and a diverse inventory of organic molecules - become alive Details of that chemical history continue to foster intense debate, but the overarching narrative, as represented in the collected essays of these proceedings, is becoming clear. [Pg.7]
