Negative evidence

In the following table are given a few values, chiefly from the data of Harkins, of the spreading coefficients for a number of liquids which spread,upon water and for liquids which do not spread but form lenses, in this latter case the value of cr [o + o- z is evidently negative.

On the weight of evidence, negative results were obtained with the flavouring agents of this group when tested in in vitro mutation assays in S. typhimurium and coil, as well as in mammalian cells. Negative results were also obtained in in vivo micronucleus assays. 

As for CIDNP, the polarization pattern is multiplet (E/A or A/E) for each radical if Ag is smaller than the hyperfme coupling constants. This equation is a quadratic and has two roots. For quantum mechanical reasons, we are interested only in the lower root. By inspection, x = 0 leads to a large number on the left of Eq. (1-10). Inhibition of Nitrosamine Formation. Nitrites can react with secondary amines and A/-substituted amides under the acidic conditions of the stomach to form /V-nitrosamines and A/-nitrosamides. These compounds are collectively called N-nitroso compounds. There is strong circumstantial evidence that in vivo A/-nitroso compounds production contributes to the etiology of cancer of the stomach (135,136), esophagus (136,137), and nasopharynx (136,138). Ascorbic acid consumption is negatively correlated with the incidence of these cancers, due to ascorbic acid inhibition of in vivo A/-nitroso compound formation (139). The concentration of A/-nitroso compounds formed in the stomach depends on the nitrate and nitrite intake. 

One standard test used to determine the presence of the coliform group is called the multiple-tube fermentation technique (sometimes called the presumptive test). If this test indicates the presence of these bacteria, then a confirmed test must be done. If only negative colonies or no colonies develop during this test, it is considered negative otherwise, a completed test must be undertaken. Positive results obtained in the completed test are evidence for the presence of coliform bacteria. Testing methods have been given by the APHA, and the detailed procedures contained therein should be consulted (20). 

Evidence for the formation of oxabicyclobutane (6) in the irradiation (S) was negative (72JA1193). The striking difference in photochemical behavior of enones such as (5) and the analogous conjugated dienes, which readily form bicyclobutanes, is attributed to the substantially greater endothermicity of the isomerization in the oxa series.
