Negative evidence

So, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) with a weight ratio of vinyl alcohol residue in PVA to acrylic acid monomer 4 6 exhibit positive swelling changes with temperature but IPNs 6 4 evidence negative swelling ones [48],... [Pg.129]

In the following table are given a few values, chiefly from the data of Harkins, of the spreading coefficients for a number of liquids which spread, upon water and for liquids which do not spread but form lenses, in this latter case the value of cr [o + o- z is evidently negative. [Pg.64]

For each of the gases we have an formation rate this rate is evidently negative for the reactants. [Pg.20]

On the weight of evidence, negative results were obtained with the flavouring agents of this group when tested in in vitro mutation assays in S. typhimurium and coil, as well as in mammalian cells. Negative results were also obtained in in vivo micronucleus assays. [Pg.299]

As for CIDNP, the polarization pattern is multiplet (E/A or A/E) for each radical if Ag is smaller than the hyperfme coupling constants. In the case where Ag is large compared with the hyperfmes, net polarization (one radical A and the other E or vice versa) is observed. A set of mles similar to those for CIDNP have been developed for both multiplet and net RPM in CIDEP (equation (B1.16.8) and equation (B1.16.9)) [36]. In both expressions, p is postitive for triplet precursors and negative for singlet precursors. J is always negative for neutral RPs, but there is evidence for positive J values in radical ion reactions [37]. In equation (B 1.16.8),... [Pg.1607]

This equation is a quadratic and has two roots. For quantum mechanical reasons, we are interested only in the lower root. By inspection, x = 0 leads to a large number on the left of Eq. (1-10). Letting x = leads to a smaller number on the left of Eq. (1-10), but it is still greater than zero. Evidently, increasing a approaches a solution of Eq. (1-10), that is, a value of a for which both sides are equal. By systematically increasing a beyond 1, we will approach one of the roots of the secular matrix. Negative values of x cause the left side of Eq. (1-10) to increase without limit hence the root we are approaching must be the lower root. [Pg.7]

In Fig. 5.21, from Dawson s paper, the uptake at X for the 250°C-outgassed sample is dose to the calculated value for a monolayer of water with a (H20) = 101 A. Point X has therefore been ascribed to a close-packed monolayer of water on a hydroxylated surface of rutile. The fact that the differential entropy of adsorption relative to the liquid state (calculated from the isosteric heat of adsorption) changes sharply from negative to positive values in this region with A s 0 at X was regarded as supporting evidence. ... [Pg.278]

Succinic anhydride is extremely irritating to the eyes. It causes skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract irritation. It may be a sensiti2er. There is no evidence of carcinogenic activity in male or female tats given 50 or 100 mg/kg succinic anhydride (186) the Ames test is negative (187). LD q in rat 1510 mg/kg. There ate no estabflshed exposure limits for ACGIH TLV or TWA. [Pg.538]

Inhibition of Nitrosamine Formation. Nitrites can react with secondary amines and A/-substituted amides under the acidic conditions of the stomach to form /V-nitrosamines and A/-nitrosamides. These compounds are collectively called N-nitroso compounds. There is strong circumstantial evidence that in vivo A/-nitroso compounds production contributes to the etiology of cancer of the stomach (135,136), esophagus (136,137), and nasopharynx (136,138). Ascorbic acid consumption is negatively correlated with the incidence of these cancers, due to ascorbic acid inhibition of in vivo A/-nitroso compound formation (139). The concentration of A/-nitroso compounds formed in the stomach depends on the nitrate and nitrite intake. [Pg.22]

One standard test used to determine the presence of the coliform group is called the multiple-tube fermentation technique (sometimes called the presumptive test). If this test indicates the presence of these bacteria, then a confirmed test must be done. If only negative colonies or no colonies develop during this test, it is considered negative otherwise, a completed test must be undertaken. Positive results obtained in the completed test are evidence for the presence of coliform bacteria. Testing methods have been given by the APHA, and the detailed procedures contained therein should be consulted (20). [Pg.233]

Evidence for the formation of oxabicyclobutane (6) in the irradiation (S) was negative (72JA1193). The striking difference in photochemical behavior of enones such as (5) and the analogous conjugated dienes, which readily form bicyclobutanes, is attributed to the substantially greater endothermicity of the isomerization in the oxa series. [Pg.186]

If the nuU hypothesis is assumed to be true, say, in the case of a lower-tailed test, form 3, then the distribution of the test statistic t is known under the null hypothesis that limits [L = Io- Given a random sample, one can predict how far its sample value of t might be expecied to deviate from zero by chance alone when [L = Io- If ihe sample value of t is too small, as in the case of a negative value, then this would be defined as sufficient evidence to rejeci the nuU hypothesis. [Pg.497]
