Hazards and operability (HAZOP) studies This approach allows the mind to go free in a controlled environment. Various events are suggested for a specific piece of equipment with the participants determining whether and how the event could occur and whether the event creates any form of risk. 

When 1,3-dienes containing a tethered alcohol are subjected to Wacker-type reactions, the initial intramolecular oxypalladation event creates a 7r-allylpalladium species, which can then undergo an additional bond-forming process to effect an overall 1,4-difunctionalization of the diene with either cis- or // -stereochemistry (Scheme 18).399 An array of substrate types has been shown to participate in this reaction to generate both five- and six-membered fused or ro-oxacycles.435-437 Employing chiral benzoquinone ligands, progress toward the development of an asymmetric variant of this reaction has also been recorded, albeit with only modest levels of enantioselectivity (up to 55% ee).438... 

A single ionization event creates a hole and an ejected electron. To maintain charge neutrality, if a hole is trapped, then an electron is also trapped. Therefore the radical yield must consist of equal oxidation (e removal) and reduction (e trapping) events. The electron addition half occurs exclusively at the bases, while the electron loss half occurs according to the number of electrons per component. That means 52% of the holes are initially generated on the sugar phosphate, corresponding to 26% of the initial radicals. A...

An anticipatory system is one in which information is sent from an element in the early stages of a sequence of events to a nonacting element that will arise in that sequence. The information sent ahead prepares the future element to function based on information arising in advance of the normal sequence of events. The unmanifested element anticipates its ultimate manifestation in the sequence. An anticipatory system has been modeled by Kier and Cheng94 using the dynamic characteristics of cellular automata. A concentration of an intermediate product influences the creation of a supplemental enzyme that enhances the competence of an enzyme downstream. This anticipation of a future event creates a condition in which the concentration of a later substrate is suppressed, a property characteristic of the system. 

An external disaster becomes a problem for a facility when the consequences of the event create a demand for services that tax or exceed the usual available resources (e.g., arrival of a large number of trauma patients or victims of a chemical HAZMAT incident). 

Finally, the catalyst that begins the plot can be a tool in creating an archetype, if it is an event with which the audience can readily identify the delivery of a letter mailed four years earlier from a post office seven blocks away the arrival of a draft notice the traffic gridlock that prevents the character from arriving for the job interview or the long-anticipated date of the semiformal. All of these catalytic events create a situation each of us can identify with. 

Though the primary business of soybean processing is to produce animal protein feed, 17 to 20% of the soybean is an oil coproduct. In the 1960s, human health concerns about cholesterol caused an increase in demand for soybean oil. Food manufacturers shifted away from animal by-products as a source of fat or oil. Then in the 1970s, concerns arose about saturated fats from tropical oils. This caused another spike in demand as U.S. food manufacturers switched from palm oil to less saturated oils, such as soy. These events created significant opportunities for soybean oil to become the preferred oil for food manufacturers. Now evidence links the presence of trans-fatty acids, found in processed soybean oil, with heart disease. For some products, soybean oil is partially hydrogenated to improve products appearance, stability,... 

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 in the former USSR is the latest major event creating fallout to the oceans. Two-thirds of the c. 100 PBq Cs released was deposited outside the Soviet Union. The total input to the world oceans of Cs from Chernobyl is estimated to be from 15-20 Pbq, i.e. 4.5 PBq in the Baltic Sea 3-5 PBq in the Mediterranean Sea, 1.2 PBq in the North Sea and about 5PBq in the northeast Atlantic. 

The separation of time-like and space-like events creates the impression of two types of response to increased curvature of space-time. If only space coordinates are curved it results in the inversion of the time coordinate and the conversion of matter into antimatter. This situation will be encountered in the Schwarzschild solution of the gravitational field equations, which serves as a model of a black hole, and assumed here to account for an inversion at Z/A = 1.04. It resembles the limitless time-like accumulation of matter, resulting in a space-time singularity. 

Formal and informal notations for representing the event chain may contain only the events or they may also contain the conditions that led to the events. Events create conditions that, along with existing conditions, lead to events that create new conditions, and so on (figure 2.6). The tank corrodes event leads to a corrosion exists in tank condition, which leads to a metal weakens event, which leads to a weakened metal condition, and so forth. 

Like the aimealing of steel, the processes were challenged and refined by many forces. This included the evolution of global markets and increasing business complexity. Many companies failed first before they could go forward. The greatest moves forward came not from success, but from failure. Material event after material event created a boardroom understanding of why bricks matter. This book is a synopsis of this journey.

In 2004 the occurrence of a sentinel event - an incompatible blood group heart transplant - at University Hospital Zurich abruptly made patient safety a central concern of the hospital. Results can directly prioritize the contributors leading to the top event creating the critical equipment, parts, and events lists for different importance measures. 

In the seas, banded iron formations once again painted the bottom with iron and oxygen, like in the original Great Oxidation Event, creating the second BIF peak in Figure 8.1 in Chapter 8. At least three or four cold snaps passed over the planet like an inverse fever. The chemistry of the oceans changed dramatically, and soon after, so did life. 

Initiating events create the hazard scenario (assuming aU the safety systems have been compromised, which will be studied in the event trees) and have a probability of occurrence attached to them. Remember that an initiating event itself is not always negative it is the consequences of the initiating event that are hazardous. 

An event can be shorter than the media file it contains, in which case only a portion of the loop is mixed into the project. An event can be longer than the loop it contains, in which case multiple repetitions of the loop are mixed into the project. Figure 2.6 shows a number of different events created from the same media file. Track 1 (top track) contains an event that is exactly the same length as the loop file (only one repetition). Track 2 uses the same source loop file, but the events in it use only short sections of the total file. Track 3 again nses the same source loop file, but the event in it is three times longer than the original file and therefore contains three repetitions (it is looped three times). 

The Make new track follow project tempo (Beatmapped track) item is selected by default. This adds tempo information to the file when it is saved and does not affect the sound of the file at all. It does, however, allow ACID to automatically line up events created in the track and make pitch and tempo changes along with the project. Files that have not been recorded in ACID can also have tempo information saved to them to take advantage of these ACID features. This is called Beatmapping and is discussed in Chapter 9. 

Tracks 3, 4, and 5 are three takes of the same section of music. The best parts of each take have been isolated into individual events, creating a seamless composite take. This is the same set of takes shown in Figure 5.5.
