Evaporation consolidation

To meet the 1993 Energy Standards, the industry undertook, at considerable cost, the optimization of the various refrigeration system components. The most significant improvement was the increase in compressor efficiency, from an EER of about 4 to about 5.5. Other system improvements included more efficient fan motors, more effective heat transfer by the evaporator and the condenser, and less defrost energy. In the early 1980s, both the Whirlpool Corporation and White Consolidate Industries introduced electronic defrost controls. Heretofore, an electric timer initiated the defrost cycle, typically every t A elve hours, whether the evaporator needed it or not. With the electronic control the defrost inteiwal is more a function of frost accumulation than of time, and thus referred to as a variable defrost control or as adaptive defrost. It saves energy by being activated only when needed. [Pg.1000]

Extensive, horizontal sandstone plateaus occur in tropical shield areas. Well-known examples are the Precambrian Roraima sandstone formations on the Guiana Shield and the Voltaian sandstone formations in Western Africa. Major occurrences of consolidated sands are found in Northern Africa, in Guyana and Surinam, eastern Peru, northeastern Brazil and in Liberia (western Africa). These sandstone formations have a history of tropical weathering in common they all have a deep weathering mantle of bleached, white sands that are very rich in quartz, poor in clay and excessively drained. Immediately following the Sol 2 gel transition in the dry process, a primary gel structure is obtained. This gel is seldom Isolated because continued evaporation produces the completely consolidated membrane, known as the secondary gel. The secondary gel is ordinarily the only product of interest. However, this is not usually the case for the wet process. After the viscous solution has been gelled by Immersion and the solvent system removed, a stable primary gel is obtained. Retained solvents may act as plasticizers (i.e., unless the solvent evaporates completely, the deposited resin may not have the same properties as the original solid in its pure state). Retained solvent lowers the glass-transition temperature. If the Tg of the mixture is at or below room temperature, rubbery behavior will result, and consolidant effectiveness will be reduced. Acryloid B72 seemed to retain solvent in films cast from acetone and toluene solutions and then air-dried (12).
