Although the highest concentrations of this membrane-localized enzyme are in the kidney and pancreas, increases of plasma GGT have been reported following cholestasis in rats, where GGT changes are more specific than those observed for ALP, even though the basal plasma GGT levels are very low (Huseby and Torstein 1978 Leonard, Neptun, and Popp 1984 Evans 1986 also see Chapter 2). Plasma GGT activity is rarely altered by primary hepatocellular toxicity in laboratory animals. 

Similar to the major redox-sensitive ions, discussed before, the quantity and distribution of AVS in sediments depend upon, for example OM input, sediment burial, sulphate diffusion, sediment mixing and sediment temperature (Morse et al., 1987 Matisoff and Holdren, 1995). Leonard et al. (1993) have shown that variations in AVS concentrations in lake sediments are directly correlated with temperature of the over-lying lake water. Fig. 5 clearly shows that a higher sulphate reduction rate is reflected in AVS present closer to the SWI. Large fluctuations in AVS have also been measured in sediments deposited in lakes with a seasonally anoxic water column (Howard and Evans, 1993).

The examples presented above show that the implications of behavioural adaptation for cost-benefit analyses depend on the extent and natnre of behavioural adaptation. As far as the degree of behavioural adaptation is concerned, it is instructive to apply the concept of human feedback parameter introdnced by Leonard Evans (1985). Evans denotes the actual safety effect of a measure, that is, the changes in the expected nnmber of crashes, by This effect is not necessarily identical to the engineering effect, that is, the effect a measnre wonld have if no behavioural adaptation took place. Some researchers and scholars are convinced risk compensation is real and detrimental to injury prevention (Adams, 1985a,b Peltzman, 1975 Wilde, 1994) others contend the phenomenon does not exist. Lehman and Gage (1995) proclaim, for example, that "this alleged theory (risk compensation) has neither experimental nor analytical scientific basis" Dr. Leonard Evans of General Motors Research Laboratories is quoted as saying "... there are no epicycles and there is no phlogiston. . . similarly, there is no risk homeostasis" (Wilde, 1994).

In general, there is an increased cation leaching with decreased pH of the treatment solution. But K doesn t seem to follow this rule strictly Evans et al. (1981), Fairfax and Lepp (1975), Leonard and Fluckiger (1988, 1989a) and Paoletti et al. (1989) all reported decreased K leaching at lower pH.
