The EU has shown interest in LCA as a tool in product policies. An inte-gtated product policy (IPP) is being developed in which LCA plays an important role. The EU has shown interest in LCA in its support for research in the ELI framework programs, in directives where LCA is mentioned, and in LCA information by the European Environmental Agency, EEA. [Pg.1367]

As for the development of agrienvironmental indicators, there has been substantial progress since 1990. Particularly useful are the schemes developed by OECD, Eurostat and the European Environmental Agency (EEA). The main challenge is to apply these schemes in practice, because in many areas and in most parts of the world, an environmental monitoring that is sufficiently disaggregated in temporal and spatial terms is still rudimentary. [Pg.282]

The widespread application of herbicides in agriculture has resulted in many polluted surface waters. As a result, numerous pesticides/herbicides have been treated in bench-scale laboratory studies with 03/UV/H202 processes during the last 10 years (see Table 10). Among them, many studies focused on the treatment of atrazine and other. v-triazine herbicides (simazine, prop-azine, etc.). Atrazine is a priority pollutant that similar to other individual pesticides has a very low maximum contaminant level (MCL) (0.1 pg L 1 for the European Environmental Commission according to Directive 80/778/ EEC). In some countries atrazine cannot be used but it is still found in many surface waters. In France, for example, atrazine was banned on September 28, 2001. From applied technologies, only carbon adsorption [180] and possibly advanced oxidations can be recommended to remove some of these... [Pg.52]

Specify the toxic or nontoxic character of the main chemicals involved in the process. Information on toxicity and hazard effects can be found on the websites of agencies for public environment and health, such as for example the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Environmental Agency. A good introduction to environmental engineering is the book of Allen and Shon-nard [4]. In the field of process safety, the book of Crowl and Louvar [5] is still popular. The book of Kletz [6] covers the topics of hazard and operability, as well as hazard analysis. [Pg.28]
