Ethers alkylation with malonates

The sodium salts of dialkyl malonates were reacted with isothiocyanates (346) in diethyl ether or in THF at -10°C-0°C. The products were then alkylated with alkyl halides to give mixtures of tautomeric (alkylthio)ami-... [Pg.96]

Mildly basic liquiddiquid conditions with a stoichiometric amount of catalyst prevent hydrolysis during alkylation [101] and, more recently, it has been established that solid-liquid or microwave promoted reactions of dry materials are more effective for monoalkylation [102-106] of the esters and also permits dialkylation without hydrolysis. Soliddiquid phase-transfer catalytic conditions using potassium f-butoxide have been used successfully for the C-alkylation of diethyl acetamido-malonate and provides a convenient route to a-amino acids [105, 107] use of potassium hydroxide results in the trans-esterification of the malonate, resulting from hydrolysis followed by O-alkylation. The rate of C-alkylation of malonic esters under soliddiquid phase-transfer catalytic conditions may be enhanced by the addition of 18-crown-6 to the system. The overall rate is greater than the sum of the individual rates observed for the ammonium salt or the crown ether [108]. [Pg.251]

Acronychia haplophylla Eng. (A. tetrandra F. Muell.) (Rutaceae) Acrophylline, C17H17O3N (mp 120°) (I) and acrophyllidine, C17H19O4N (mp 177°) (II). The structures were determined largely by spectroscopic methods but the hexahydro derivative of I was shown to have structure III by a synthesis. For this purpose A-acetyl-m-anisidine was alkylated with isoamyl bromide in the presence of sodium hydride in DMF. Hydrolysis gave A-isoamyl-m-anisidine which on heating to reflux temperature with diethyl malonate in diphenyl ether gave III (mp 174°) (3a). [Pg.456]

The allylic alkylation with weak nucleophiles employing nickel catalysts is generally not as efficient as the corresponding palladium-catalyzed methods. However, allylic acetates, allyl phenyl ethers, and allylic carbonates undergo efficient couplings with amines, phenols, and malonates in the presence of nickel(O) catalysts (Scheme 25). ... [Pg.23]

The second method involves end-quenching of living polymers with appropriate nucleophiles. Although this approach appears to be more attractive than the first one, in situ end funaionali-zation of the living ends is limited to nucleophiles that do not react with the Lewis add coinitiator. Because the ionization equilibrium is shifted to the covalent spedes, the concentration of the ionic active species is very low. Quantitative functionalization can only be accomplished when ionization takes place continuously in the presence of nudeophile. Quenching the vinyl ether polymerization with the malonate anion, certain silyl enol ethers " and silyl ketene acetals have been successfully used to synthesize end-functionalized poly(vinyl ethers). Alkyl amines, " ring-substituted anilines, " " alcohols, " and water " have also been used to quench the vinyl... [Pg.511]

CH OfiSj, H2C(S03H)2- a colourless, crystalline solid which readily absorbs water vapour decomposes on distillation. The potassium salt is prepared by heating methylene chloride with an aqueous solution of potassium sulphite under pressure at 150-I60" C. The free acid is obtained by decomposing the sparingly soluble barium salt with sulphuric acid. The aryl esters are very stable, but the alkyl esters decompose on heating to give ethers. Resembles malonic acid in some of its reactions. [Pg.259]

Ceric ammonium nitrate promoted oxidative addition of silyl enol ethers to 1,3-butadiene affords 1 1 mixtures of 4-(/J-oxoalkyl)-substituted 3-nitroxy-l-butene and l-nitroxy-2-butene27. Palladium(0)-catalyzed alkylation of the nitroxy isomeric mixture takes place through a common ij3 palladium complex which undergoes nucleophilic attack almost exclusively at the less substituted allylic carbon. Thus, oxidative addition of the silyl enol ether of 1-indanone to 1,3-butadiene followed by palladium-catalyzed substitution with sodium dimethyl malonate afforded 42% of a 19 1 mixture of methyl ( )-2-(methoxycarbonyl)-6-(l-oxo-2-indanyl)-4-hexenoate (5) and methyl 2-(methoxycarbonyl)-4-(l-oxo-2-indanyl)-3-vinylbutanoate (6), respectively (equation 12). [Pg.698]

The use of /i-ketocstcrs and malonic ester enolates has largely been supplanted by the development of the newer procedures based on selective enolate formation that permit direct alkylation of ketone and ester enolates and avoid the hydrolysis and decarboxylation of ketoesters intermediates. Most enolate alkylations are carried out by deprotonating the ketone under conditions that are appropriate for kinetic or thermodynamic control. Enolates can also be prepared from silyl enol ethers and by reduction of enones (see Section 1.3). Alkylation also can be carried out using silyl enol ethers by reaction with fluoride ion.31 Tetraalkylammonium fluoride salts in anhydrous solvents are normally the... [Pg.14]

However, difluoromethylation occurs when nucleophiles intercept difluoro-carbene generated under basic conditions, providing a route to difluoromethyl-ethers of phenols [33] and thiophenols [34]. The reaction with phosphite anion leads to the corresponding difluoromethyl phosphonate (see Sect. 2.3.2) while nucleophilic carbanions such as alkynes [35] also undergo formal alkylation, as do malonates [36,37]. An -difluoromethylaziridine was reported in a reaction with a glycine imine [38]. The scope of the established chemistry is summarised in Fig. 1. Bromodifluoromethylation occurs with a similar range of nucleophiles [39,40], and also with carbonyl-stabilised carbanions such as malonates [41,42]. [Pg.137]

Among common carbon-carbon bond formation reactions involving carbanionic species, the nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides with active methylene compounds in the presence of a base, e. g., malonic and acetoacetic ester syntheses, is one of the most well documented important methods in organic synthesis. Ketone enolates and protected ones such as vinyl silyl ethers are also versatile nucleophiles for the reaction with various electrophiles including alkyl halides. On the other hand, for the reaction of aryl halides with such nucleophiles to proceed, photostimulation or addition of transition metal catalysts or promoters is usually required, unless the halides are activated by strong electron-withdrawing substituents [7]. Of the metal species, palladium has proved to be especially useful, while copper may also be used in some reactions [81. Thus, aryl halides can react with a variety of substrates having acidic C-H bonds under palladium catalysis. [Pg.213]
