The seeds of Vaccaria segetalis (Caryophyllaceae) have been used to stimulate blood flow and promote milk secretion, and also to treat amenorrhea and breast infections in China (224). Extraction and purification of chemical constituents showing follicle hormonic activity led to the isolation of the new, bioactive cyclic peptides segetalins A-H (322-329) (225-228). Some segetalins showed potent estrogen-like activity. Although some cyclic peptides such as oxytocin and vasopressin show hormone activities, none show estrogen-like activity.

Most oral contraceptive pills used by women today contain a combination of two synthetic hormones. One, most commonly ethynyl estradiol, has estrogen-like activity in regulating the menstrual cycle. The other, most commonly norethindrone, has progesterone-like activity and establishes a state of false pregnancy that prevents ovulation. In a theme that is common in drug development, successful contraceptives are very similar in molecular structure to those natural molecules with similar activity. Synthetic steroids with estrogen-like activity are also used medically to replace natural hormones where there is a disease-related deficiency, after a hysterectomy, or after menopause. A major benefit of these drugs is a slowing of the normal bone loss (osteoporosis) that occurs with age.
