Examples of naturally occurring bioactive cyclopeptides are Segetalins A and B (Figure 1.3.11), which were isolated from Vaccaria se.gd.alis (Caryophyllacea) and were shown to have estrogen-like activity. The seeds of Vaccaria segetalis are used... [Pg.41]

Saponins of Gypsophila plant facilitate the release of intracellular K+ and lactate dehydrogenase in rat hepatocytes, suggesting that they destabilize the plasma membrane [127] by removing membrane lipids [128]. Furthermore, Gypsophila plant derived saponins induce differential permeability of the intracellular membrane of rat hepatocytes [129], Vaccaroid A, a triterpenoid saponin from Vaccaria segetalis [130], induces contractivity of rat uterus. [Pg.56]

The seeds of Vaccaria segetalis (Caryophyllaceae) have been used to stimulate blood flow and promote milk secretion, and also to treat amenorrhea and breast infections in China (224). Extraction and purification of chemical constituents showing follicle hormonic activity led to the isolation of the new, bioactive cyclic peptides segetalins A-H (322-329) (225-228). Some segetalins showed potent estrogen-like activity. Although some cyclic peptides such as oxytocin and vasopressin show hormone activities, none show estrogen-like activity. [Pg.364]
