Of these dimethyl phthalate (DMP) is used in most compositions. It is cheap, has a high compatibility with secondary cellulose acetate and is efficient in increasing flexibility, toughness and the ease of flow at a given temperature. Its principal disadvantages are its high volatility and the fact that it increases the flammability of the compound. Similar in compatibility but rather less volatile is diethyl phthalate. This material has less of an influence on flexibility and flow properties than the methyl ester.

Russell and coworkers had found that treatment of dimsyl anion 88 or of a similar methylsulfonyl carbanion with 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-dicarboxylic acid esters can give five- to seven-membered cyclic compounds. By this type of cyclization, they prepared ninhydrin hydrate 106 from diethyl phthalate .

In a static-culture-flask screening test, diethyl phthalate showed significant biodegradation with rapid adaptation. The ester (5 and 10 mg/L) was statically incubated in the dark at 25 °C with yeast extract and settled domestic wastewater inoculum. After 7 d, 100% biodegradation was achieved (Tabak et al, 1981).

Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) dissolves at pH higher than 6 and is soluble in ketones, ethers, esters, and alcohols. Permeation of water vapor and gastric fluids is a concern but can be overcome by adding other materials such as shellac. Plasticizers that are used with CAP include diethyl phthalate, triacetin, tributyl citrate, and acetylated monoglyceride. 

To determine whether the plasticizer was functioning as solvent, attempts were made to extract the analyte (salicylic acid) with liquid diethyl phthalate. The distribution ratio for this extraction was negligibly small. This finding indicated that the PVC polymer rather than the phthalate ester plasticizer served as the solvent. 

High Boiling Esters. The following procedure can he used for making diethyl phthalate and other high boiling esters. Phthalic anhydride (I equiv) and 2.5 equivalents of ethanol are refluxed for 2 h in the presence of 1% of concentrated H2SO4. 

Amyl, butyl, and iso-propyl acetates are all made from acetic acid and the appropriate alcohols. All are useful lacquer solvents and their slow rate of evaporation (compared to acetone or ethyl acetate) prevents the surface of the drying lacquer from falling below the dew point, which would cause condensation on the film and a mottled surface appearance (blushing). Other esters of importance are used in perfumery and in plasticizers and include methyl salicylate, methyl anthranilate, diethyl-phthalate, dibutyl-phthalate, and di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate.

A more important example is the synthesis of the rat poison PivaT. An enolizable ketone that is blocked on one side by a tertiary butyl group reacts with diethyl phthalate to give a five-membered cyclic diketone in one reaction by two Claisen ester condensations.
