[Pg.88]

The production of acids and bases is a direct consequence of the works of alchemists who did not start to work in the Middle Ages but in Hellenistic Alexandria [13]. So, from the twelfth to the sixteenth century, the following names appear vitriol or sulfuric acid H SO, eau forte or nitric acid HNO, and esprit de sef or solution of hydrogen chloride (HCl) in water. The traditionally known bases such as potash, soda, or ammonia were called alkalis (from the Arabic word al-qaly designating the plants named soda). [Pg.3]

J.R. Glauber prepared nitric acid by heating saltpeter with sulfuric acid, a method that was used thereafter until recently replaced by the ammonium oxidation method. Glauber proved that his product was the same as the acids previously obtained by heating saltpeter with substances other than sulfuric acid. He called his acid aqua fortis spiritus acidus nitri , but it later became known as spiritus nitri fumans Glauberi . The French at first called it eau de depart , then I esprit de nitre finally I acide nitrique or I acide ayotie . [Pg.273]

A philosophical spirit of wine prepared by repeatedly distilling alcohol with oil of vitriol must have contained ether. Volatile vitriol of Venus (copper acetate), obtained in blue crystals from a solution of verdigris in distilled vinegar, yields on distillation and rectification a colourless spirit of Venus (esprit de Venus), i.e. concentrated acetic acid. Spirit of Saturn is distilled from sugar of lead (sucre ou sel de Satume). The distillation of amber yields a spirit, an oil, and volatile salt (succinic acid) of acid taste, soluble in water, which can be sublimed in white crystals. One of Le Fevre s special preparations was a volatile salt of vipers obtained by distillation, and he extols the virtues of tobacco. ... [Pg.24]

Sweet spirit of nitre (esprit de nitre dulcifie) is made from alcohol and spirit of nitre (nitric acid), the heat generated coming from the friction between the sulphurous particles and the spirit of nitre. The esprit de sel dulcifie de Bazil Valentine is made from equal parts of alcohol and spirit of salt digested at a gentle heat for three or four days the sulphurous spirit of the wine breaks the acid points and takes away part of their movement. ... [Pg.32]
