EPM rubbers

Peroxide crosslinking of the copolymer is more efficient than that of the homopolymer (Table 9-1). The process becomes a chain reaction (but with short kinetic chain length) involving polymerization of the pendant vinyl groups on the polysiloxane chains in combination with coupling of polymeric radicals. The crosslinking of EPDM rubbers is similarly more efficient when compared to EPM rubbers since the former contain double bonds in the polymer chain. [Pg.743]

The EPM rubbers, being completely saturated, require organic peroxides or radiation for vulcanization. The EPDM terpolymers can be vulcanized with peroxides, radiation, or sulfur. [Pg.33]

Propylene content in EPM rubber can be determined with the help of IR spectra. A propylene band near 1155 cm 1 has been widely used [79] for EPM analysis, frequently in combination with the polyethylene band at 721 cm"1. Tacticity is important in EPM rubber, and the bands at 1229 and 1252 cm"1 are characteristic of syndiotactic and isotactic structures, respectively, (both bands are present in atactic polypropylene as well). Polymer structure may vary in the relative tactic placement of adjacent head to tail propylene units and in the sequence distribution of base units along the chain. Some of them can be identified [80] by infrared spectra, such as isolated or head to tail propylene units ... [Pg.90]

When ethylene is copolymerized with substantial amounts (>25%) of propylene an elastomeric copolymer is produced, commonly known as ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) or ethylene-propylene monomer (EPM) rubber. When a diene, such as dicyclopentadiene, is also included, a terpolymer known as ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber is obtained. EPR and EPDM are produced with single site and Ziegler-Natta catalysts and are important in the automotive and construction industries. However, EPR and EPDM are produced in much smaller quantities relative to polyethylene. Elastomers display vastly different properties than other versions of industrial polyethylene and are considered outside the purview of this text. EPR and EPDM will not be discussed further. [Pg.6]

More homogeneous copolymer cpmpositions are obtained with soluble Zieg-ler-Natta catalysts, especially where monomer compositions are maintained relatively constant during polymerization. Commercially important ethylene-propylene binary copolymers (EPM rubbers) and ethylene-propylene-diene ternary copolymers (EPDM rubbers) are made by this process. [Pg.576]

Because of their saturated structure, EPM rubbers cannot be vulcanized by using accelerated sulfur systems, and the less convenient vulcanization with free-radical generators (peroxide) is required. In contrast, EPDM rubbers are produced by polymerizing ethylene and propylene with a small amount (3-8%) of a diene monomer, which provides a cross-bnk site for accelerated vulcanization with sulfur. [Pg.414]

In this paper we report on the preparation of a functionalized ethylene-propylene random copolymer (EPM) and on the synthesis of EPM-g-PA 6 graft copolymers utilizing the functionalized EPM. Preliminary results on the use of modified EPM rubbers in PA 6/EPM blends have been previously reported . [Pg.193]
