The terms green chemistry and environmentally benign synthesis have been coined to refer to procedures explicitly designed to minimize the for mation of byproducts that present disposal problems Both the National Science Foundation and the Envi ronmental Protection Agency have allocated a por tion of their grant budgets to encourage efforts m this vein... [Pg.644]

NEW Green chemistry promotes environmentally sound chemistry. Passages in the text created in consultation with Michael Cann and new end-of-chapter exercises are accompanied by a (IT). Topics include ionic liquids (Chapter 5), supercritical C02 (Chapter 8), yttrium in paint (Chapter 12), chelates as a substitute for chlorine bleach (Chapter 16), and transesterification (Chapter 19). [Pg.17]

We have reported a simple, green, bench top, economical and environmentally benign room temperature synthesis of MSe (M=Cd or Zn) nanoparticles using starch, PVA and PVP as passivating agents. The whole process is a redox reaction with selenium acting as the oxidant and MSe as the reduction product. An entire "green" chemistry was explored in this synthetic procedure and it is reproducible. The optical spectroscopy showed that all the particles are blue shifted from the bulk band gap clearly due to quantum confinement. Starch capped CdSe nanoparticles showed the presence of monodispersed spherical... [Pg.179]

In the 20 years since the Brunddand report, great developments have taken place in industries toward sustainable practices. As a case in point, the problem of acid rain, an issue of concern in 1987, has improved to a large extent, thanks to catalytic pollution abatement both in stationary and automotive emissions. Catalysis for Green Chemistry and Engineering will continue to have a cracial role in improving the environmental performance of industry [25-27]. Nowadays, catalytic procedures are often implemented according to the green chemistry... [Pg.147]

As a cautionary note PTC should not be considered a panacea for all of the problems associated with green chemistry. Two-phase reactions involving water are often difficult to deal with industrially, particularly if the water is contaminated with trace amounts of hazardous organic substances. In some cases it may be more practical, cost effective and environmentally prudent to avoid production of aqueous waste in favour of a recyclable less benign solvent. [Pg.120]

In the United States, several federal programmes and focused regulations that incorporate elements of green chemistry have been put into place to reduce risks. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 has clearly stated that pollution prevention at the source is the highest and most desired level of environmental protection. ... [Pg.29]
