Of prime importance to the continued growth of polypropylene are the stabilizer systems which must be used to protect the resin during processing, and during exposure of finished products to various environmental and use conditions. The weak tertiary carbon—hydrogen bonds in polypropylene make it particularly susceptible to degradation caused by heat, oxidation, process shearing, and ultraviolet radiation (24). [Pg.217]

Similar to reports in this monograph research and development to modify cellulosic fibers to impart new properties were programs proposed in the 1930 s and later implemented on a large scale in laboratories and industry. Modifications of the properties of cellulosic fibers by addition of finishes and by chemical reactions to make them more resistant to fire, mildew, crushing, creasing, soiling, abrasion, chemical action, and other environmental and use conditions and to impart special reactivities have continued to be of interest. [Pg.33]

Proteins occur widely in both plant and animal sources. Proteins in a fibrous form, such as silk, wool, and hides and skins, are processed into textile and other useful commercial products. Modifications of the properties of wool and of leather derived from hides and skins, some of which are discussed in this symposium, have been widely reported. Because of the variety of environmental and use conditions in which sealants are placed, there are a number of other tests that should be mentioned. C793-05 is a test method for accelerated weathering of sealants. In this method, the sealant is coated on an aluminum plate and then exposed to either a xenon arc lamp, a fluorescent UV lamp, or an open flame carbon arc for a specified number of hours. Because of the special stabiHty of the hexafluoroarsenate ion, there are a number of appHcations of hexafluoroarsenates. For example, onium hexafluoroarsenates (33) have been described as photoinitiators in the hardening of epoxy resins (qv). Lithium hexafluoroarsenate [29935-35-1] has been used as an electrolyte in lithium batteries (qv). Hexafluoroarsenates, especially alkaH and alkaline-earth metal salts or substituted ammonium salts, have been reported (34) to be effective as herbicides (qv). Potassium hexafluoroarsenate [17029-22-0] has been reported (35) to be particularly effective against prickly pear. Immunosensors promise to become principal players ia chemical, diagnostic, and environmental analyses by the latter 1990s. Given the practical limits of immunosensors (low ppb or ng/mL to mid-pptr or pg/mL) and their portabiUty, the primary appHcation is expected to be as rapid screening devices ia noncentralized clinical laboratories, ia iatensive care faciUties, and as bedside monitors, ia physicians offices, and ia environmental and iadustrial settings (49—52). Industrial appHcations for immunosensors will also include use as the basis for automated on-line or flow-injection analysis systems to analyze and control pharmaceutical, food, and chemical processing lines (53). Immunosensors are not expected to replace laboratory-based immunoassays, but to open up new appHcations for immunoassay-based technology. [Pg.30]

Dentistry. Mercury is used in dental amalgams for fillings in teeth (see Dental materials). Dental uses have accounted for 2—4% of total U.S. mercury consumption since 1980 and generally 3—6% before that time (3). Dental amalgams used to fill cavities in teeth are approximately 50% mercury by weight. Dental use of mercury can be expected to continue to decrease, in part because of more effective cavity prevention as well as development and increasing use of alternative dental materials such as plastics and ceramics, and increasing awareness of the environmental and health effects of mercury. [Pg.109]

In the case of essential oils used in many fragrance appHcations, these oils must be on many of these Hsts. New essential oils used in fragrances are subject to premanufactuting or premarketing notification (PMN). PMN requirements vary by country and predicted volume of production. Outlook. Total 1991 U.S. ink consumption was estimated at about 86 x 10 kg valued at over 3.0 biUion. The demand is estimated to grow at an average of about 3—4% per year in volume (26). The principal changes expected in the 1990s will continue to be in response to environmental and safety concerns and government regulations.
