To define the scope and boundary of a system and its relation and interactions with its immediate environment to build the requirements spec for a system or subsystem to be installed or to review the context of a legacy system. 

It is intriguing that Mo is an important element in biology despite its scarcity at the Earth s surface—indeed, no element of similar scarcity is so biochemically ubiquitous. The reason for this paradoxical combination is unknown. Possible explanations include the unique chemical character of this element, evolutionary adaptation to the abrmdance of Mo in oxygenated oceans relative to other transition metals, a legacy of prebiotic chemical evolution in Mo-rich environments (e.g., in association with sulfide minerals), or some combination of these factors. Regardless, this paradox has inspired creative hypotheses about the importance of Mo in evolution (Crick and Orgel 1973 Anbar and Knoll 2002).

When it comes to assessing the compliance level of existing ( legacy ) electronic systems, don t shy away from a critical review. A legacy of the use of an estimated 600 kg of the herbicide Agent Orange during the conflict in Vietnam has been the contamination of soil, rivers, sediment and biota with dioxins [53, 54]. Hot spots of contaminated soils in the Aluoi Valley and other former US bases where the pesticides were stored have recently been identified [53]. These sites have considerably higher dioxin levels compared with regions where dioxins were aerially sprayed. These sites, if not cleaned up, will be a continued source of dioxins to the local environment for the foreseeable future. 

Simple There is an obvious legacy field equivalent, or lack of equivalent, to the new system field. Complex There is information in the legacy environment but, before it is suitable for entry into the new system, the field length or format needs to be changed. Perhaps the field needs to be transformed, several fields need to be eombined, a field in the legacy system needs to be split to feed several fields in the new system, or there may be a combination of all or some of these.

Watersheds are sources of mercury to the aquatic environment. However, and similar to biomass burning and evasion, the mercury released from watersheds is of mixed origin. Because the residence time of mercury within watersheds is fairly long (see Section 9.04.6), the potential for the buildup of legacy mercury exists. The use of stable isotopes of mercury to track pathways of inputs and uptake is innovative.
