Anole lizards from some Caribbean islands (Anolis spp.) provide another example of evolutionary convergence. In Cuba, Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico (the so-called Greater Antilles), the observed phenomenon suggests that in similar environments adaptive radiation can overcome historical contingencies to produce strikingly similar evolutionary outcomes. The most notable change in recent years is the increase in female soldiers for example, 8.2% of the British Army are women and 71% of British Army roles are open to women (UK Ministry of Defence, 2009). In addition, there is evidence that the physical size of personnel is also changing (Pringle et al., 2007). LCS has traditionally adapted to the size and shape of users through the use of textiles, which can be made up into flexible and pliable three-dimensional shapes. The interaction between LCS and humans is, however, more complex, being dependent on adjustment of straps, correct load placement, and biophysical and cognitive makeup of the user. Figure 13.1 shows how an LCS-human machine system can be represented within the soldier system and work environment (adapted from Sanders and McCormick, 1993). [Pg.289]

The blind person has his work activities damaged if it is not possible to find an environment adapted to its needs of knowing where he is and where to go. He is willing to have insecurity and stress at his work position, not only because of altitudinal and instrumental barriers, but also because of architectonic and communicational hurdles. [Pg.465]

Indeed, traffic behaviour is also more than just adaptation to risks. People have many motivations in traffic, in addition to the basic one of reaching their destination in the desired time. Thereby, the concept of behavioural adaptation should be broader than just a risk-based concept. It should encompass the whole phenomenon, including its varied and disparate motivators, just as the definition of behavioural adaptation in natural sciences An adaptation is any trait that changes to better suit the organism for its environment. Adaptations are genetically based and can be passed on from generation to generation. Behavioural adaptations are those adaptations that have a behavioural component to them (eHow, 2011). [Pg.12]

In FMEA process, inaccurate and indefinite statement of failure cause frequently occurs. For example, failure cause corresponding to failure mode dynamo conflict is described as reducer failure , however, reducer failure does not explain what the actual reason of dynamo conflict is. The reason should illustrate how the reducer fails, such as a reducer control software problem, a reducer hardware problem or an environment problem. Such relevant preventive measures can suit the remedy to the case. If it is an operating environment problem, improving environment or environment adaptability should be adopted if it is a control software problem, work related to enhancing software reliability should be done. FMEA work is an activity that goes into the whys and wherefores, if the failure cause cannot be properly distinguished, we could not put forward appropriate technology improvement measures, so effectiveness of FMEA is doubtful. Eor this reason, the failure cause should be analyzed carefully instead of superficial and simple failure appearance. [Pg.153]
