Enterprise software development

These abstraction layers offer tremendous benefits to the software development process with reduced development complexity and costs and increased productivity. Application server platforms and blueprints also provide software development frameworks to help the software fit into specific architecture patterns. One of the most commonly adopted software architecture patterns for enterprise systems is the layered architecture (Buschmann et al., 1996 Fowler, 2003a). It is also the heart of the J2EE blueprint (Alur et al., 2003). 

The term system development life cycle is simply a generic expression for a system implementation process or methodology. Methodologies are central to implementing enterprise software, and every implementer has one. From a cultural perspective, the system development life cycle (SDLC) becomes a language that people within the organization can speak fluently.

Importantly, piracy is heavily dependent on which software sector you are in. It is generally agreed that the real problem is with PC software, whereas it is a fairly small problem in specialized software service and enterprise application software. For example, there is little piracy in highly specialized service software such as is developed by Accenture, IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers and EDS or in enterprise software such as is developed by Oracle, SAP, CA and UFSoft. Rather, Microsoft and Adobe products are typically the types of software that are pirated. 

The big players in the chemical industry have developed very powerful company-specific ERP systems (enterprise resource planning earlier this type of system was denoted as production planning and control) since the 1960s. The growing costs to maintain and adapt these systems have motivated the move to integrated standard business software systems in the last decade. The majority of the big chemical companies use SAP R/3 resp. SAP ERP from SAP AG other well-known solution vendors include Marcam (now part of Infor) and JD Edwards (now part of PeopleSoft resp. Oracle). 

This list includes all kinds of development work. We have already discussed model frameworks and template packages, which can be valuable to an enterprise. They are white-box assets What you see is what is they offer. By contrast, an executable piece of software, delivered without source code, can perform a useful and well-defined function and yet not be open to internal inspection. Software vendors prefer such black-box components. 

The development of algorithms for the handling of chemical structures and data, and the application of artificial intelligence to property prediction, etc., led to the emergence of companies specialising in chemical software applications, now known as chem(o)informatics. Ideally such enterprises should couple with large dictionary databases. 

Many process safety information databases are designed to share metrics across a facility or even an entire enterprise. For example, databases developed to monitor PHA studies across an enterprise can track PHA studies by business, by site, and by unit. Systems are developed by the operating company or purchased from a systems vendor, and some enterprise business software can provide similar capabilities.
