Ceramics and minerals present many common problems, but ceramics warrant special treatment because elements of low atomic number predominate in them and they consequently offer x-ray emission spectrog-raphy of the light elements an excellent opportunity to prove its usefulness. Scott,8 in making this clear, emphasized the absorption and enhancement effects to be expected, and pointed out the need for careful sample preparation. By use of a General Electric XRD-5 spectrograph and associated equipment, he set up working curves for alumina, silica, potash, lime, phosphate, titania, and iron oxide in clays, refractories, and other ceramic materials. [Pg.222]

It is well known that flnorescence from an RP-18 phase is much brighter than from a silica gel plate, because the coating of RP-18 material blocks nomadiative deactivation of the activated sample molecules. By spraying a TLC plate with a viscous liquid, e g., paraffin oil dissolved in hexane (20 to 67%), the fluorescence of a sample can be tremendously enhanced. The mechanism behind fluorescence enhancement is to keep molecules at a distance either from the stationary layer or from other sample molecules [14]. Therefore, not only paraffin oil, but a number of different molecules show this enhancement effect. [Pg.169]

A good example of a reactive modifier which has been used (14) to enhance properties of polyolefins is maleic anhydride (MA). The formation of maleic adduct in polypropylene (PP), for example, can be used to effect several modifications e.g. to improving hydrophilicity, adhesion and dyeabflity. For trace analysis in fluids, some Raman sensors (try to) make use of the SERS effect to increase their sensitivity. While the basic sensor layout for SERS sensors is similar to non-enhanced Raman sensors, somehow the metal particles have to be added. Other than in the laboratory, where the necessary metal particles can be added as colloidal solution to the sample, for sensor applications the particles must be suitably immobilised. In most cases, this is achieved by depositing the metal particles onto the surfaces of the excitation waveguide or the interface window and covering them with a suitable protection layer. The additional layer is required as otherwise washout effects or chemical reactions between e.g. sulphur-compounds and the particles reduce the enhancement effect. Alternatively, it is also possible to disperse the metal particles in the layer material before coating and apply them in one step with the coating.
