Starch is extensively used due to its adsorbing properties. In dissolved form, it is used as a skin emollient and as an antidote for iodine poisoning. Other applications include the use as a tablet filler and binder and disintegrant. Sterilized starch is used as a lubricant for surgeon gloves. Unlike talc, it is completely adsorbed by body tissues. Soluble starch is prepared by treating commercial potato starch with dilute hydrochloric acid until it forms an almost clear solution in hot water. 

Generally, reinforcing, cell-wall polysaccharides are least soluble while emollients, mucilaginous, and food reserve polysaccharides represent the most soluble group. Exceptions to the generalization that reserve food polysaccharides are easily soluble occur in starch amylose and seed mannan. Starch amylose is readily dispersible in most of its natural forms since it occurs mixed with easily soluble amylopectin which facilitates the dissolution of the amylose. 

Although it is not currently included in the pharmacopeias, a specification for hydroxypropyl starch is included in the Japanese Pharmaceutical Excipients (JPE) 2004 see Table I. Hydroxypropyl starch is compatible with cationic ingredients (monovalent, divalent), oils, emollients, and silicone. 

Starch is also used in topical preparations for example, it is widely used in dusting powders for its absorbency, and is used as a protective covering in ointment formulations applied to the skin. Starch mucilage has also been applied to the skin as an emollient, has formed the base of some enemas, and has been used in the treatment of iodine poisoning.

Starch is made up of two polymers of glucose units, amylose (linear chain) and amy-lopectin (branched polymer). It is used as the basis to manufacture talcum powder and powder make-up products due to its soothing and emollient properties.
