Starch is extensively used due to its adsorbing properties. In dissolved form, it is used as a skin emollient and as an antidote for iodine poisoning. Other applications include the use as a tablet filler and binder and disintegrant. Sterilized starch is used as a lubricant for surgeon gloves. Unlike talc, it is completely adsorbed by body tissues. Soluble starch is prepared by treating commercial potato starch with dilute hydrochloric acid until it forms an almost clear solution in hot water.

As the talc, cornstarch, and other insoluble tablet fillers embolize to the lungs, they become trapped within the pulmonary tissues and eventually cause pulmonary hypertension. This leads to the development of collateral vessels that allow part of the venous retmn to bypass the lungs and enter the left side of the heart, where the particles are further embolized to the eye and other organs of the body. The presence of talc particles in the eye indicates that substantial foreign body damage has occurred in the lungs. 

Tribasic calcium phosphate is widely used as a capsule diluent and tablet filler/binder in either direct-compression or wet-granulation processes. The primary bonding mechanism in compaction is plastic deformation. As with dibasic calcium phosphate, a lubricant and a disintegrant should usually be incorporated in capsule or tablet formulations that include tribasic calcium phosphate. In some cases tribasic calcium phosphate has been used as a disintegrant. It is most widely used in vitamin and mineral preparations as a filler and as a binder. It is a source of both calcium and phosphorus, the two main osteogenic minerals for bone health. The bioavailability of the calcium is well known to be improved by the presence of cholecalciferol. For lactose production the whey is evaporated to 55-65% solid content, and the concentrate is then seeded and cooled slowly to induce sugar crystallization. Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate has been suggested as a diluent for granulated tablet systems containing up to 30% of active ingredient. The primary uses of precipitated calcium carbonate in the pharmaceutical industry are as a fast acting antacid, and as a tablet filler. It is inexpensive, very white, nonhydroscopic, and inert.
