Another connnon approximation is to construct a specific fonn for the many-body waveftmction. If one can obtain an accurate estimate for the wavefiinction, then, via the variational principle, a more accurate estimate for the energy will emerge. The most difficult part of this exercise is to use physical intuition to define a trial wavefiinction.

Reportable releases under CERCLA must be reported to the National Response Center, at (800) 424-8802. Reporting under EPCRA requires notifying the facihty s LEPC (or relevant local emergency response personnel if there is no LEPC) and the SERC of any state likely to be affected. If a faciUty is near the border of another state, that state may have to be notified as well. Notification is required to be immediate, which is usually defined as within 30 minutes of the release. State or local authorities may have additional or different reporting requirements. Eailure to report release in a timely manner can result in severe penalties from the regulatory authorities. 

Resistance to Tetracyclines. The tetracyclines stiU provide inexpensive and effective treatment for several microbial infections, but the emergence of acquired resistance to this class of antibiotic has limited their clinical usehilness. Studies to define the molecular basis of resistance are underway so that derivatives having improved antibacterial spectra and less susceptibiUty to bacterial resistance may be developed. Tetracyclines are antibiotics of choice for relatively few human infections encountered in daily clinical practice (104), largely as a result of the emergence of acquired tetracycline-resistance among clinically important bacteria (88,105,106). Acquired resistance occurs when resistant strains emerge from previously sensitive bacterial populations by acquisition of resistance genes which usually reside in plasmids and/or transposons (88,106,107). Furthermore, resistance deterrninants contained in transposons spread to, and become estabUshed in, diverse bacterial species (106). 

This formula, however, tacitly supposes that the instanton period depends monotonically on its amplitude so that the zero-amplitude vibrations in the upside-down barrier possess the smallest possible period 2nla>. This is obvious for sufficiently nonpathological one-dimensional potentials, but in two dimensions this is not necessarily the case. Benderskii et al. David Turnbull, in his illuminating Commentary on the Emergence and Evolution of Materials Science (Turnbull 1983), defined materials science broadly as the characterisation, understanding, and control of the structure of matter at the ultramolecular level and the relating of this structure to properties (mechanical, magnetic, electrical, etc.). That is, it is Ultramolecular Science . In professional and educational practice, however, he says that materials science focuses on the more complex features of behaviour, and especially those aspects controlled by crystal... 

One of the defining features of a new discipline is the publication of textbooks setting out its essentials. In Section 2.1.1, devoted to the emergence of physical chemistry, I pointed out that the first textbook of physical chemistry was not published until 1940, more than half a century after the foundation of the field. Materials science has been better served. In what follows, I propose to omit entirely all textbooks devoted to straight physical metallurgy, of which there have been dozens, say little about straight physics texts, and focus on genuine MSE texts.
