Although some differences in procedure and format exist between different plants, emergency response guidelines (ERGs) are generally written in a dual column format. PROBLEM DEFINITION. This is achieved through plant visits and discussions with risk analysts. In the usual application of THERP, the scenarios of interest are defined by the hardware orientated risk analyst, who would specify critical tasks (such as performing emergency actions) in scenarios such as major fires or gas releases. Thus, the analysis is usually driven by the needs of the hardware assessment to consider specific human errors in predefined, potentially high-risk scenarios. This is in contrast to the qualitative error prediction methodology described in Section 5.5, where all interactions by the operator with critical systems are considered from the point of view of their risk potential. 

In the pilot plant stage, additional material becomes available so that the reaction hazards can be investigated more extensively. Process control features and deviations from normal operating conditions can be checked. Operating procedures can be drafted and checked. Emergency procedures can be defined.

This chapter Is an effort to Identify the various concepts and approaches currently being used by scientists to chemically define the parameters of plant resistance to pests. Of the thirteen approaches that were identified, only three, each associated with behavior, were unique to insects. The remaining 10 are generally applicable to either insects or diseases, and were therefore not separated. The listing of examples of these may suggest emerging trends which are being successfully followed for the elucidation of the various chemical bases of plant resistance. The examples include not only those presented in this symposium book, but others recently reported.
