Electrolyte replenishment

Potassium bicarbonate is used in baking powder and effervescent salts. In medicine, the salt is a gastric antacid and an electrolyte replenisher. It also is dry powder in fire extinguishers. 

Sodium chloride is probably the most important salt of both sodium and chlorine. Sodium chloride, common table salt, is an essential component of most food preparation, imparting flavor to food and providing the sodium nutritional requirement. Also, it is used for preserving food. Therapeutically, NaCl solution is used to combat dehydration as an electrolyte replenisher, and it is an emetic.

The main drawback of the AFC is the absorption of CO2 from the air by the alkaline solution. Carbon dioxide reacts with the hydroxide to form carbonate 2K+ + 20H- + CO2 - K2CO3 + H20, which has limited solubility in concentrated alkali, thus leading to deleterious precipitates within the electrode pores. Although there is no absolute solution to this problem, electrolyte replenishment, and upstream C02 scrubbers provide reasonable compromises. 

CM was started on intravenous insulin, fluids, and electrolyte replenishment. Her nausea and vomiting resolved and, although initially, she required 60-70 units of insulin intravenously per day to attain glycaemic control, her blood glucose dropped to 7.4 mmol/L after 4 days of intensive care. However, despite treatment of her diabetic ketoacidosis, including significant rehydration therapy, CM was still found to have an elevated but stable serum creatinine of 246 micromol/L, and so she was transferred from the intensive care unit to the renal unit for further management.

As with the other types of hydrogen probe deseribed above, the electrochemical patch probe requires an initial stabilization period. In addition, it requires regular maintenance in the form of electrolyte replenishment and/or renewal.
