Electrolytes carbonation

In acid electrolytes, carbon is a poor electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution at potentials where carbon corrosion occurs. However, in alkaline electrolytes carbon is sufficiently electrocatalytically active for oxygen evolution to occur simultaneously with carbon corrosion at potentials corresponding to charge conditions for a bifunctional air electrode in metal/air batteries. In this situation, oxygen evolution is the dominant anodic reaction, thus complicating the measurement of carbon corrosion. Ross and co-workers [30] developed experimental techniques to overcome this difficulty. Their results with acetylene black in 30 wt% KOH showed that substantial amounts of CO in addition to C02 (carbonate species) and 02, are... [Pg.238]

Whereas PVA fleeces are used only in primary cells polyamide fleeces compete with polyolefin, preferably polypropylene fleeces. The latter are more stable at higher temperatures and do not contribute to electrolyte carbonation, but they wet only after a pretreatment either by fluorination [131] or by coating and crosslinking with hydrophilic substances (e.g., polyacrylic acid [132]) on the surface of the fiber. [Pg.287]

The effective service life of Air/PANI-Zn battery can be greater by several folds than that of conventional alkaline air-zinc batteries owing to the absence in principle of electrolyte carbonization (pH < 7). [Pg.124]

Metal-air cells are developed with air gas-diffusion cathodes and Mg-anodes. Non-aggressive NaCl-solution is used as electrolyte. Carbon based catalysts for the oxygen reduction are selected and tested in the air gas-diffusion electrodes. Various Mg-alloys are tested as anodes. The V-A, power and discharge characteristics of the Mg-air cells are investigated. [Pg.126]

Sucessful application of the air electrode requires solving some key problems the air electrode catalyst, the alkaline electrolyte carbonization, the oxygen reaction with anode materials, an influence of an air humidity on an electrode behavior. [Pg.158]

If battery is open to the air, carbonization of alkali takes place in accordance with process (9). For purposes of prevention of electrolyte carbonization, the respiratory holes should be sealed until after the beginning of battery use. [Pg.163]

Chemicals and solutions. Aqueous salt solutions were prepared from water purified through reversed osmosis (conductivity 5 to 10 pS/cm at 25 °C). The following salts were used calcium chloride tetrahydrate, CaCl24H20 (Merck Suprapur), sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO, (Merck p.a.) and sodium chloride, NaCl (Merck Suprapur) as supporting electrolyte. Carbon dioxide, C02(g) was of analytical grade. [Pg.350]

Figure 5 presents the capacitance-frequency dependence from impedance spectroscopy measurements for CS48 and CS15 in acidic and organic medium. In the low frequency region (from ImHz to lOOmHz) nearly a complete penetration of the ions into the pores is allowed and the quite stable values indicate the domination of the capacitive behavior at the electrolyte/carbon interface. The second electrolyser was a research unit assembled for SRNL by the University of South Carolina (USC). It was constructed with platinised carbon cloth electrodes, a Nafion 115 PEM electrolyte, carbon paper flow fields, solid graphite back plates, copper current collectors and stainless steel end plates. The USC electrolyser had an active cell area of 40 cm and a Pt catalyst loading of 0.5 mg/ cm (only one-eighth that of the commercial cell). The carbon-based configuration proved to be much more corrosive resistant than the commercial-type electrolyzer. A photograph of the two electrolyzer units is shown in Figure 3. [Pg.254]

The development of high performance electrolytes is an important task in the production of devices for electric energy storage and delivery such as lithium ion batteries, capacitors, and electrochromic devices. Carbonate-based materials are one of the liquid electrolytes. Carbonate-based liquid electrolytes are now commonly used for the economical lithium ion batteries [31]. The solution of carbonate and lithium salts exhibits high ionic conductivity, on the order of 10-3 S cm-1 at ambient temperature. [Pg.153]
