Training electrical safety

Electrical safety training usually includes a module on emergency response. This is probably important, but to insure that any emergency response training has value requires practice and reinforcement. The following is atypical emergency response outline for an electrical accident with some annotation.

A written safety program that includes the following topics new employee safety orientation, safety training, hazard communication, emergency action plan, fall protection, scaffolding, heat stress, personal protective equipment, electrical, first aid, and bloodborne pathogens. 

These three factors served to encourage die development of the field and at the same time served to define the field itself. The increased prevalence of technology and medical instrumentation in hospitals meant that hospital organizations had to develop ways to take care of these devices. With this rapid proliferaticm of what were primarily electrical devices in the vicinity of the patient, some assurance of the electrical safety of the patient needed to be provided. Finally, the skills, training, and education of engineers and technologists who were to become involved in these activities needed to be vetted. 

Safety personnel can help lab safety by providing training, resources, and consultation for a variety of laboratory safety issues, including chemical safety, biological safety, electrical safety, laser safety, radiation safety, and other topics. They can also review the chanical hygiene plan, help develop and maintain laboratory safety manuals, conduct exposure monitoring, inspect fume hoods, and perform safety audits.

Note This is not to say that the safety official must be an electrical engineer. Instead, we recommend some training in the fundamentals of electricity—this training should be included in the safety official s formal college or advanced short-school training. The minimum electrical system and component operation knowledge that safety officials should have is covered in the following discussion. 

The following section provides an overview of basic electrical safety for individuals with little or limited training or familiarity with electrical hazards. The concepts and principles presented will help further an understanding of OSHA s electrical safety standards.
