There is considerable momentum behind an investigation of the potential of a PFNA system. A prototype of a PFNA system has been tested at the Ysleta Port of Entry (located near El Paso, Texas) on truck cargo containers. Projects on ongoing to have a PFNA system tested in an airport environment.

It also happens that new researchers are being attracted to the field of polyhex enumerations. E. C. Kirby (Resource Use Institute, Pitlochry, Scotland, UK) may be reckoned as one of them, although his latest contributions [141,143] were preceded by some other enumeration-oriented works [85,153]. Last September, I moved away from the United States-Mexico border for the first time. Friends were sure I d miss the visible evidence of Mexico s proximity found in cities like my native El Paso, Texas. Friends smiled that I d soon be back for good Mexican food, for the delicate taste and smell of fresh cilantro, for fresh, soft tortillas. From Other Sources. Other major sources of air pollution by lead in Mexico are the smelting and refining activities. As can be seen in Table 1, there are three cities with a potential for a public health problem because of these activities Chihuahua, Torreon, and Monterrey. To them, the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Chih., must be added this city is located across the border from El Paso, Texas, USA, and its population, in particular that of some marginal areas, is exposed to the emissions from a smelting facility located at El Paso. 

Dust. As part of her study on the lead content in blood in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, Ordonez et al. (1976) carried out the analysis of lead in 70 samples of indoor dust accumulated in the homes of the children selected for the study. Samples of superficial soil in gardens, backyards, and orchards were also included. This study was motivated by the existence of a smelter at El Paso, Texas, U.S., whose emissions affect some socioeconomic marginal areas of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, due to the prevalent winds. The average concentrations of lead found in the dust samples are shown in Figure 8. A positive correlation between the lead values in the dust and those in blood was found, with a significance of/ < 0.001. 

Another study of lead in blood was carried out at Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. This city is located across from El Paso, Texas, U.S., where a smelter is a major source of pollution from this metal, both for the local population and for people living in the Mexican side of the border. A previous study on lead in blood of children at El Paso was carried out in 1972 (Landrigan et al., 1975).
