Some nickel compounds may be irritant to skin and eyes and dermal contact with nickel can result in allergic contact dermatitis. Nickel carbonyl is extremely toxic by inhalation and should be handled in totally enclosed systems or with extremely efficient ventilation. Air monitors linked to alarms may be required to detect leaks. Respiratory equipment must be available for dealing with leaks. Biological checks (e.g. nickel in urine) should be considered for routine operations involving nickel catalysts.

Harmful effects can occur because of inhalation of vapour or skin absorption. Solvent-based adhesives are probably the greatest potential problem as far as toxicity is concerned because their mode of operation involves the evaporation of large quantities of solvents. Some of the components of reaction-setting adhesives are highly toxic and very efficient ventilation is necessary. Molten polymers have very low vapour pressures. However, additives in hot melt adhesives and decomposition products may produce toxic vapours, especially if reservoirs of melt adhesives are used. Emulsion adhesives where the dispersion medium is water represent the safest group of adhesives from the toxicity viewpoint.

Formaldehyde is listed as a suspected human carcinogen and has a 0.3 ppm short-term exposure limit (STEL). Fortunately this very low exposure limit can be met since the use of formaldehyde in chemical synthesis processes involve closed systems which minimize worker exposures. Laboratory use of formaldehyde solutions must be conducted in hoods with efficient ventilation.
