Effect of magnesium oxide

Two patients with hypothyroidism taking a fixed dosage of levothyroxine took aluminium hydroxide and magnesium oxide (72). In both cases there was a marked increase in the serum concentration of TSH and low serum T4. After withdrawal of the antacids, TSH again fell. In vitro studies showed a dose-related adsorption of levothyroxine by a combination of aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium carbonate, but no effect of magnesium oxide alone.

Magnesium oxide is an effective nonsystemic antacid, ie, it is converted to the hydroxide. It does not neutralize gastric acid excessively nor does it hberate carbon dioxide. The light form is preferable to the heavy for adininistration in Hquids because it is suspended more readily. One gram of magnesium oxide neutralizes 87 mL of 0.1 NUCl in 10 min, and 305 mL in 2 h.

In this special field, earlier work had been done in other laboratories, such as by the Schering Company, Berlin (36), and by Ipatieff (37) in connection with his work on the hydrogenation of camphor and of other organic compounds. At both places, the favorable effect of alkali oxides and earth alkali oxides on nickel, cobalt and copper has been investigated. Similarly, Paal and his coworkers (38) have used a palladium-aluminum hydroxide catalyst in 1913 for the hydrogenation of double bonds. Bedford and Erdman (39) had reported that the catalytic action of nickel oxide is enhanced by the oxides of aluminum, zirconium, titanium, calcium, lanthanum, and magnesium. 

Magnesium deficiency, usually the result of decreased absorption or excessive excretion, results in neuromuscular weakness and ultimately convulsions. Dietary deficiency in catde is known as the grass staggers. Magnesium toxicity from impaired excretion or excessive consumption of antacids results in vomiting, hypertension, and central nervous systems effects. Inhalation of magnesium oxide from welding can cause metal fume fever similar to that from zinc.

Magnesium oxide filter resulted more effective in reducing asbestos fibre concentration. However, further optimization studies should to be undertaken (for example filter bed granulometry, duration of the filter, liquid flow, mechanical and electrical combination in removing asbestos fibres) to justify also economically, the utilization of magnesium oxide filter instead of sand filter.
