Economic factors cost-effectiveness

Further chapters cover in detail the characteristics and applications of galvanic anodes and of cathodic protection rectifiers, including specialized instruments for stray current protection and impressed current anodes. The fields of application discussed are buried pipelines storage tanks tank farms telephone, power and gas-pressurized cables ships harbor installations and the internal protection of water tanks and industrial plants. A separate chapter deals with the problems of high-tension effects on pipelines and cables. A study of costs and economic factors concludes the discussion. The appendix contains those tables and mathematical derivations which appeared appropriate for practical purposes and for rounding off the subject. 

When sufficient evidence is available to determine that the patient has real seizures and is at risk for another seizure, pharmacotherapy is usually started (Fig. 27-2). The patient should be in agreement with the plan, be willing to take the medication, and be able to monitor seizure frequency and adverse drug effects in some way. Design of an appropriate pharmacotherapeutic plan is based on the patient s seizure type, the common adverse-effect profile of possible AEDs, and economic factors (e.g., cost of the drug, insurance formulary, and ability to pay). Other patient factors such as gender, concomitant drugs, age, and lifestyle also need to be considered. 

In recent years in some developed countries, the requisite of presenting economic evaluation (that is, pharmacoeconomic) studies of new dmgs has been introduced alongside the existing one of clinical trials. These studies have to provide proof of their efficiency (or cost-effectiveness) as a condition for the public financing of the new product. These studies improve information and market transparency and may help to make competition keener, but like the earlier requirements regarding effectiveness and safety, they constitute an additional cost factor and as such raise further barriers to entry. 

Although plant cell culture is not as cost effective as plant cultivation in the open field, it will become an economical process if higher protein yields can be achieved [58]. The cultivation medium of plants is chemically defined, consisting of a carbon source, minerals, vitamins and phytohormones [69]. Furthermore, it is protein-free and relatively inexpensive. In contrast, animal cells often require complex supplements such as fetal calf serum and/or expensive growth factors, although serum-free cultivation is possible in case of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells [70].

A Techno Economic Evaluation revealed the main factors influencing the costs and thereby the cost-effectiveness of a membrane steam-reformer compared to conventional processes (chapter 2). The evaluation showed that membrane steam reforming can be cost-effective.
