PhenoHc sheet-molding compound is seeing increased use in interior and exterior appHcations in mass transit. The trains in service on the English Channel tunnel have several panels made from phenoHc SMC which had to meet the strict European safety standards for fire and smoke generation. [Pg.307]

The Duke of Orleans was visiting London so in February 1790, Leblanc crossed the English Channel on his first trip outside France. Orleans agreed to invest the equivalent of 8 million in a start-up factory to exploit Leblanc s secret process. On February 12, in the London office of a French-speaking notary public named James Sutherland, Leblanc signed a contract with the Duke, his agent, and Professor Darcet s assistant. [Pg.8]

The firework mentality also decreed that even if the range was achievable, in order for an unguided rocket to follow a rainbow trajectory across the English Channel and fall, under gravity, onto London, the launch angle would have to be impossibly precise - about half a degree from the vertical, in fact. [Pg.57]

A recent investigation of marine red algae has shown that the major lipid-soluble metabolite of Laurencia obtusa, collected in the English Channel, is 3j8-bromo-8-epicaparrapi oxide (11) (c/. isolation of a- and jS-snyderol (12) from L. obtusa collected in Spain Vol. 7, p. 54). [Pg.66]

Advances came quickly. Chemists designed special acrylic polymers that could be used in the manufacture of leak-proof tape to wrap around undersea cables. Or blended with rubber to produce a mortar that swelled on contact with water, providing a tight seal. This was used in the construction of the Chunnel, the artery that connects England and France beneath the waters of the English Channel. You sure wouldn t want any water seeping through those walls. Super slurpers have also proven themselves useful in the little pads you sometimes... [Pg.151]

Chalk consists almost entirely of calcite. formed principally by shallow-water accumulation of (l) calcareous tests of floating microorganisms and (2) comminuted remains of calcareous algae. The most widely distributed chalks are of Cretaceous age. as exemplified by the cliffs on both sides of the English Channel. Although an unallered deposit, chalk masses may contain nodules of chen and pyrite. [Pg.321]

Pollution from petroleum compounds has been a major concern since the mid-1960s. In 1967 the first major accident involving an oil tanker occurred. The Torrey Canyon ran onto rocks in the English Channel, spilling oil that washed onto the shores of England and France. It is estimated that at least 10,000 serious oil spills occur in the United States each year. In addition, flushing of oil tankers plays a major role in marine pollution. Other sources, such as improper disposal of used oil by private car owners and small garages, further contribute to oil pollution. [Pg.41]
