Echothiophate iodide

Powders for Reconstitution. Drugs that have only limited stability in liquid form are prepared as sterile powders for reconstitution by the pharmacist prior to dispensing to the patient. In ophthalmology, these drugs include a-chymotrypsin, echothiophate iodide... [Pg.456]

L The answer is b. (Hardman, pp 166-167.) Echothiophate iodide is a long-acting (irreversible) cholinesterase inhibitor. It is used topically in the eye for the treatment of various types of glaucoma. Maximum reduction of intraocular pressure occurs within 24 h, and the effect may persist for several days. The drug is a water-soluble compound, which affords it a practical advantage over the lip id-soluble isofluorphate (another cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat glaucoma). [Pg.184]

The clinically useful anticholinesterase agents diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP, Floropryl) and echothiophate iodide (Phospholine Iodide [PI]) demonstrate an indirect-acting mechanism resulting in increased levels of acetylcholine at the cholinergic receptor sites. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase produces a relatively long-lasting and irreversible effect of maintaining active levels of acetylcholine at the parasympathetic synapses. [Pg.666]

There are few, if any, indications for the therapeutic use of miotics in the horse. However, a 2% solution of the parasympathomimetic agent pilocarpine can induce miosis in normal eyes after repeated topical application (van der Woerdt et al 1998). The cholinesterase irihibitor topical miotics, including demecarium bromide and echothiophate iodide, appear to be potentially uveitogenic in the horse and should not be used. [Pg.241]

Echothiophate todide, U5P. Echothiophate iodide. (2-mcreaptoethyDtrimethylammonium iodide. S-ester with O,0-dicthylphosphoroihioate (Phospholine Iodide), occurs as a white, crystalline. hygro.scopic solid that has a slight mercaptan-like odor. It is soluble in water (1 1) and dehydrated alcohol (l 2S) aqueous. solutions have a pH of about 4 and are stable at room temperature for about I month. [Pg.569]

Echothiophate iodide is a long-lasting cholinesterase inhibitor of the irreversible type, as is isofluorphate. Unlike the latter, however, it is a quaternary salt, and when applied locally, its distribution in tissues is limited, which can be very de.sirablc. It is used as a long-acting anticholinesterase agent in the treatment of glaucoma. [Pg.569]
