Dupre effect

The process of viscoelastic braking just described has certain parallels with the dynamic adhesion of elastomers. When, for example, a rubber strip is peeled from a rigid substrate, the effective, or apparent, work of adhesion, W, is usually much greater than the intrinsic, or reversible, energy of adhesion, Wq, given by the Dupre equation [15] ... 

Thns the strain energy release rate is effectively an instantaneous value of Dupre s energy of adhesion, with 6 = 0(0 instead of the equilibrium value. The sign reversal in the left-hand side of Eq. (18) when compared to Eq. (15) is due simply to the fact that we have a closing crack with a spreading liquid.

Wang and DuPre [94] found that for the PHIC-chloroform system the S values were much larger than predicted by modified Lee s theory with q = 21-37 nm (cf. Table 1). The earliest pulsed laser quantum beat experiments were performed with nanosecond pulses (Haroche, et al., 1973 Wallenstein, et al., 1974 see review by Hack and Huber, 1991). Since the coherence width of a temporally smooth Gaussian 5 ns pulse is only 0.003 cm-1, (121/s <-> 121 cm"1 for a Gaussian pulse) nanosecond quantum beat experiments could only be used to measure very small level splittings [e.g. Stark (Vaccaro, et al., 1989) and Zeeman effects (Dupre, et al., 1991), hyperfine, and extremely weak perturbations between accidentally near degenerate levels (Abramson, et al., 1982 Wallenstein, et al., 1974)]. The advent of sub-picosecond lasers has expanded profoundly the scope of quantum beat spectroscopy. In fact, most pump/probe wavepacket dynamics experiments are actually quantum beat experiments cloaked in a different, more pictorial, interpretive framework,... 

Given that the metal surface tension was the same in all csises, the thermodynamic work of adhesion depends on the interphase tension and on the adhesive surface tension. In this case (see Fig. 2.22) a correlation is seen between the thermodynamic work of adhesion and the adhesion strength. This correlation was determined earlier by Lipatov and Myshko by applying the modified equation of Dupre-Young [102]. Epoxy, polyester, pol30irethane, and polyaciylate adhesives were used the type of the adhesive did not have a significant effect on the correlation dependence. 

Dwell times generally increase the adherence force, and Fig. 10 shows the increase of w with contact time between glass and polyurethane (26). Between two polymers (auto-hesion ) this effect is ascribed to interdiffusion of chains by reptation theory and experiments (27-29) lead to a (hence a Dupre energy of adhesion, see below)... 

By measuring the contact angles between the polymer and various liquids, it is possible to calculate the proportion of surface energy effect in the initial retractive stress using Young-Dupre s equation, the value is around 0.3 After six minutes of relaxation, it increases to 0.5 ... 

Relation [9.34] is known as the Young-Dupre law. While the values of surface tension between two fluids (723 in [9.34]) can be found for usual fluids in physical properly tables for those fluids, data on the values of tensions y 2 and yi3 between each fluid and the solid are less accessible. Such quantities are difficult to measure. They depend on the surface finish of the solid wall, and vary dramatically in the presence of chemical additives deposited on the solid surface (an effect termed pollution ).
