Double investigation

Cationic surfactants may be used [94] and the effect of salinity and valence of electrolyte on charged systems has been investigated [95-98]. The phospholipid lecithin can also produce microemulsions when combined with an alcohol cosolvent [99]. Microemulsions formed with a double-tailed surfactant such as Aerosol OT (AOT) do not require a cosurfactant for stability (see, for instance. Refs. 100, 101). Morphological hysteresis has been observed in the inversion process and the formation of stable mixtures of microemulsion indicated [102]. [Pg.517]

Double potential steps are usefiil to investigate the kinetics of homogeneous chemical reactions following electron transfer. In this case, after the first step—raising to a potential where the reduction of O to occurs under diffrision control—the potential is stepped back after a period i, to a value where tlie reduction of O is mass-transport controlled. The two transients can then be compared and tlie kinetic infomiation obtained by lookmg at the ratio of... [Pg.1929]

Other investigations dealt with straight-chain molecules (oi-tricosenoic acid) in which the penultimate and final carbon atoms at the hydrophobic end are connected by a double bond [91, 92]. The material does not polymerize as rapidly as those described before when irradiated by UV light, however, but it is readily polymerized when bombarded with an electron beam. It was thus thought to be an optimal material for the fabrication of electron beam resists. [Pg.2618]

The polymers described so far have relatively flexible main chains which can result in complex confonnations. In some cases, tliey can double back and cross over tliemselves. There are also investigations on polymers which are constrained to remain in a confonnation corresponding, at least approximately, to a straight line, but which have amphiphilic properties tliat ensure tliat tliis line is parallel to tire water surface. Chiral molecules are one example and many polypeptides fall into tliis class [107]. Another example is cofacial phtlialocyanine polymers (figure C2.4.9). [Pg.2620]

As a furtlier example for tire meaning of ex situ investigations of emersed electrodes witli surface analytical teclmiques, results obtained for tire double layer on poly crystalline silver in alkaline solutions are presented in figure C2.10.3. This system is of scientific interest, since tliin silver oxide overlayers (tliickness up to about 5 nm) are fonned for sufficiently anodic potentials, which implies tliat tire adsorjDtion of anions, cations and water can be studied on tire clean metal as well as on an oxide covered surface [55, 56]. For tire latter situation, a changed... [Pg.2751]

In this section, the adiabatic picture will be extended to include the non-adiabatic terais that couple the states. After this has been done, a diabatic picture will be developed that enables the basic topology of the coupled surfaces to be investigated. Of particular interest are the intersection regions, which may form what are called conical intersections. These are a multimode phenomena, that is, they do not occur in ID systems, and the name comes from their shape— in a special 2D space it has the fomi of a double cone. Finally, a model Flamiltonian will be introduced that can describe the coupled surfaces. This enables a global description of the surfaces, and gives both insight and predictive power to the fomration of conical intersections. More detailed review on conical intersections and their properties can be found in [1,14,65,176-178]. [Pg.277]

It seems now established by NMR spectroscopic investigations that a change can take place in electronic structures and atomic configuration of the dyes depending on the polarity of the solvent. Parameters describing the transition from one single bond to more double bond character vary according to the nature of the solvent (107). [Pg.75]

Sulfated Natural Oils and Fats. Sulfated natural triglycerides were the first nonsoap commercial surfactants introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century. Since then sulfates of many vegetable, animal, and fish oils have been investigated (see also Fats AND FATTY oils). With its hydroxyl group and a double bond, ricinoleic acid (12-hydroxy-9,10-octadecenoic acid) is an oil constituent particularly suited for sulfation. Its sulfate is known as turkey-red oil. Oleic acid is also suited for sulfation. Esters of these acids can be sulfated with a minimum of hydrolysis of the glyceride group. Polyunsaturated acids, with several double bonds, lead to dark-colored sulfation products. The reaction with sulfuric acid proceeds through either the hydroxyl or the double bond. The sulfuric acid half ester thus formed is neutralized with caustic soda ... [Pg.244]

In theory, three isoxazolines are capable of existence 2-isoxazoline (2), 3-isoxazoline and 4-isoxazoline. The position of the double bond may also be designated by the use of the prefix A with an appropriate numerical superscript. Of these only the 2-isoxazolines have been investigated in any detail. The preparation of the first isoxazoline, 3,5-diphenyl-2-isoxazoline, from the reaction of )3-chloro-)3-phenylpropiophenone with hydroxylamine was reported in 1895 (1895CB957). Two major syntheses of 2-isoxazolines are the cycloaddition of nitrile A-oxides to alkenes and the reaction of a,/3-unsaturated ketones with hydroxylamine. Since 2-isoxazolines are readily oxidized to isoxazoles and possess some of the unique properties of isoxazoles, they also serve as key intermediates for the synthesis of other heterocycles and natural products. [Pg.3]

Further investigations were carried out at lipid double layers and at phospholipids of membranes. Lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions were recognized by diazirine labeling (79PNA2595). [Pg.236]

Surface SHG [4.307] produces frequency-doubled radiation from a single pulsed laser beam. Intensity, polarization dependence, and rotational anisotropy of the SHG provide information about the surface concentration and orientation of adsorbed molecules and on the symmetry of surface structures. SHG has been successfully used for analysis of adsorption kinetics and ordering effects at surfaces and interfaces, reconstruction of solid surfaces and other surface phase transitions, and potential-induced phenomena at electrode surfaces. For example, orientation measurements were used to probe the intermolecular structure at air-methanol, air-water, and alkane-water interfaces and within mono- and multilayer molecular films. Time-resolved investigations have revealed the orientational dynamics at liquid-liquid, liquid-solid, liquid-air, and air-solid interfaces [4.307]. [Pg.264]

The reaction is significantly exothermic with a heat of reaction of about 40 kcalmol . This energy will produce a sufficiently high temperature to melt the product and will allow the influence of thermochemical factors to be investigated. The temperature required to initiate the Ni-Al reaction at atmospheric pressure is about 660 °C. This reaction temperature threshold will be encountered in the shock processing, but it should be recognized that the conventional synthesis process is preceded by melting of the aluminum. At the pressure of the shock compression, the melt temperature of the aluminum will be approximately doubled to a value above the mean-bulk tempera-... [Pg.184]
