Doped ceria performances

Sol-gel technique has been used to deposit solid electrolyte layers within the LSM cathode. The layer deposited near the cathode/electrolyte interface can provide ionic path for oxide ions, spreading reaction sites into the electrode. Deposition of YSZ or samaria-doped ceria (SDC, Smo.2Ceo.8O2) films in the pore surface of the cathode increased the area of TPB, resulting in a decrease of cathode polarization and increase of cell performance [15],... [Pg.79]

In the search of high-performance SOFC anode, doped ceria have been evaluated as possible anode materials [9,10]. Comparing Ni-samaria-doped ceria (SDC) with Ni-YSZ, the Ni-SDC anode exhibits higher open-circuit voltages and a lower degree of polarization with either methanol as the fuel, as shown in Fig. 5, or methane as the fuel, as shown in Fig. 6. It was found that the depolarization ability of the anode is associated with the catalytic activity, the electrical conductivity, and the oxygen ionic conductivity of the anode materials [9]. It was also found that the anodic polarization and electro-catalytic activity strongly depend on the Ni content in the anode, and the optimum result for the Ni-SDC anode is achieved with 60... [Pg.98]

Ceria, particularly when doped with Gd203 or SmzOs," has received some attention for direct hydrocarbon conversion in SOFC. Dating back to Steele and co-workers,interesting properties have been demonstrated for ceria-based anodes in direct utilization of methane. Later work suggested that the performance of ceria-based anodes in hydrocarbons could be improved by the addition of precious-metal catalysts, at dopant levels, but the performance of these cells was still too low for practical considerations. The problem with doped ceria is likely that its electronic conductivity is not sufficient. In general, the electrode material should have a conductivity greater than 1 S/cm in order to be practical since a conductivity of 1 S/cm would lead to a cell resistance of 0.1 Q cm for an electrode thickness of 1 mm, even... [Pg.615]

Metallic gold has also been dissolved from pure ceria,51 from gadolinium-doped ceria,51 and from catalysts made by a urea gelation/coprecipitation method ,52 without significant effect on their activities for water-gas shift. The only problem that has been identified is the formation of a cerium hydroxycarbonate, which occurs during shut-down when water is present. The very extensive work performed on this system48-52 ensures that its conclusions are given full consideration. [Pg.278]

Ceria affords a number of important applications, such as catalysts in redox reactions (Kaspar et al., 1999, 2000 Trovarelli, 2002), electrode and electrolyte materials in fuel cells, optical films, polishing materials, and gas sensors. In order to improve the performance and/or stability of ceria materials, the doped materials, solid solutions and composites based on ceria are fabricated. For example, the ceria-zirconia solid solution is used in the three way catalyst, rare earth (such as Sm, Gd, or Y) doped ceria is used in solid state fuel cells, and ceria-noble metal or ceria-metal oxide composite catalysts are used for water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction and selective CO oxidation. [Pg.281]
