Division of labor

The division of labor between operations and maintenance is shown in Figure 21-4. It is the primary responsibility of the production department to establish and regulate basic operating conditions, and it is the primary responsibility of the maintenance department to improve defects in design. The other tasks are shared between the two departments.

As you will see, a team approach is probably the most effective way to do this teamwork provides both a reasonable division of labor and the opportunity to draw on a range of the disciplines that contribute to PSM.

Until the past decade, the cytoplasm was widely considered to be structurally unorganized with the main division of labor at the organellar level. Certainly, relatively little was known about the nature of the cyto-skeleton (with the notable exception of the mitotic apparatus and striated muscle), and the dynamics of cytoplasmic behavior were conceptualized vaguely in terms of sol-gel transitions without a sound molecular foundation. Substantial improvements in electron, light, and fluorescence microscopy, as well as the isolation of discrete protein components of the cytoskeleton, have led the way to a much better appreciation of the structural organization of the cytoplasm. Indeed, the lacelike network of thin filaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules in nonmuscle cells is as familiar today as the organelles identified... 

The industry includes a large proportion of owner-operators, usually made up of one self-employed, year-round worker who hires seasonal help when the number of customers exceeds a few dozen clients. At the other end of the scale are vast franchises employing thousands of people and serving hundreds of thousands of households. In between are any number of small regional firms. For any operation of more than one owner/worker, moreover, the division of labor is spread between owners, managers, sales staff, and technicians (people who spray the chemicals). 

This unusual division of labor produced some interesting results, showing how two partially incapacitated volunteers could add up to one fully incapacitated two-man team. Either could have easily assembled the small puzzle alone, even when drugged, but when they had to communicate with each other to get it done, it became almost impossible. It made an interesting TV vignette to use in official briefings. 

Patients were most satisfied with doctors who recommended a combination of psychotherapy and drug treatment and considered this to be a natural division of labor between professionals. Although most of the people I interviewed expressed dissatisfaction with doctors who were exclusively pill oriented, others described the deep and mutual trust that can develop with psychopharmacologists ...
