The quantity of breathing gas consumed in deep dives is of both economical and logistical concern at depths of 300 m, a reasonably active diver requites ca 1.8 m (64 fT at STP) of breathing gas per minute. In closed-cycle breathing systems, of both the self-contained and umbiHcal types, the helium is recitculated after carbon dioxide is removed and the oxygen replenished (147). 

The distance between the structure and fixed impressed current anodes is an important factor. The number of anodes has to be small so the anodes need to be relatively large, which will result in too negative a potential if the distance is not sufficiently great. A minimum distance of 1.5 m is prescribed [1-3], but this involves considerable construction effort due to the effects of heavy seas. Besides the so-called restriction on impressed current installations, there is the requirement that the corrosion protection be switched off when diving work is being carried out [14]. This regulation is not justifiable. Work on the underwater region of production platforms takes place continuously, as far as the weather allows if the protection must be switched off each time, the impressed current protection becomes very limited.

Starr, 1969 approached this by investigating the "revealed preferences exhibited in society ls the result of trial and error. (Similar to the "efficient market theory" in the stock market.) Stan-conjectured that the risk of death from disease appears to determine a level of acceptable voluntary risk but that society requires a much lower level for involuntary risk. He noted that individuals seem to accept a much higher risk (by about 1000 times) if it is voluntary, e.g., sky-diving or mountain climbing, than if it is imposed, such as electric power or commercial air travel, by a correlating with the perceived benefit. From this study, a "law" of acceptable risk was found concluding that risk acceptability is proportional cube of the benefits. Figure 1.4.4-1 from Starr, 1972 shows these relationships. One aspect of revealed preferences is that these preferences do not necessarily remain constant (Starr et al., 1976). Piperitone can be most easily obtained from the higher boiling portions of the oil of E. dives. It combines slowly with sodium-bisulphite, and by repeated agitation for two or three weeks eventually forms crystals in some quantity. A proportion of alcohol assists the combination. The pure ketone prepared from the purified crystals is colourless at first, but on long standing becomes slightly yellowish in tint. It has a burning peppermint-like taste and odour. The method has been criticised by H. G. Harding, who states that a pure white oil from Eucalyptus dives, which contained no cineol, showed an absorption of 32 per cent, by the resorcinol test. Rectifying the oil and applying the test to the portion distilling between 170° and 190° does not entirely remove the difficulty, as the results are always slightly high.
