By integrating Equations (3) and (4), neglecting the A term, with random initial conditions, mounds similar to those of the simulation can be obtained (Fig. 3). These mounds also coarsen in time. However, there has not been direct test of this equation as a description of multilayer growth. In particular, Eq. (4) was derived by fitting to Monte-Carlo data in the submonolayer regime. In this paper we show that certain aspects of multilayer growth by the Monte-Carlo model are well represented by Eq. (3) and (4).

This is one of the most important results in the thermodynamics of aerosols. It shows the increase in vapor pressure of small drops compared with the planar surface of the bulk material. Although the Kelvin effect appears often in the held of aerosol formation and growth, direct experimental verification is difficult and few such tests have been made (LaMer and Gruen. 1952).

Another reason for careful interpretation of the disk-diffusion assay is that it is subject to false-positive results that can be misinterpreted as antibiotic activity. For example, physical characteristics of the extract (viscosity, pH, etc.) can generate small zones of growth inhibition when bacteria are inoculated directly onto the surface of the agar plate. In addition, we have observed that some primary metabolites can inhibit growth when tested at high concentrations. It is also possible that simple molecules, or extract degradation products, can exhibit mild antibiotic properties. For these reasons, it is important that replicate extracts are tested and that small zones of inhibition are interpreted with caution. It is also important to clearly state the concentrations tested, even if naturally occurring concentrations are not known, so that activities can be reproduced and evaluated at a later time.
