Diethyl carbitol

The diethyl ether of diethylene glycol (diethyl carbitol), b.p. 186°/ 760 mm., is completely miscible with water. The above three ethers may be purified by distillation from sodium. [Pg.171]

The rearrangement has been investigated kinetically. Hawthorne and Strahm found a reaction of the first order at 100°C in diethyl carbitol with k — 5.45 X 10", corresponding to a half-life of 212 min. The activation energy was 28 kcal, the activation entropy —3 1... [Pg.100]

High yields (76-81%) of alcohols are also obtained by adding solutions of acyl chlorides in anhydrous dioxane or diethyl carbitol to a suspension of sodium borohydride in dioxane and brief heating of the mixtures on the steam bath [751], by stirring solutions of acyl chlorides in ether for 2-4 hours at room temperature with aluminum oxide (activity I) impregnated with a 50% aqueous solution of sodium borohydride (Alox) (yields 80-90%) [1014], by refluxing acyl chlorides with ether solutions of sodium trimethoxyborohydride [99], or by treatment of acyl chlorides in dichloromethane solutions with tetrabutylammonium borohydride at —78° [771]. A 94% yield of neopentyl alcohol was achieved by the reaction of trimethylacetyl chloride with tert-butylmagnesium chloride [324]. [Pg.146]

The dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol (Me 0 (CH2 CH20)2Me, diglyme) has b.p. 62°C/17mmHg the corresponding diethyl ether (diethyl carbitol) has b.p. 186°C/760mmHg. [Pg.406]

Cyclopropanecarboxaldehyde p-tosylhydrazone (157) reacts with 0.8 equivalent of sodium methoxide in an aprotic solvent (triglyme) or with 1.1 equivalent of NaOMe in ethylene glycol at 180°C to give bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (57-90 %) as a major product along with cyclobutene, 1,3-butadiene, acetylene and ethylene. On the other hand, decomposition by 1.1 equivalent NaOMe in triethylcarbinol gives mainly cyclobutene (95 %) and decomposition by excess of sodium methoxide in diethyl carbitol gives cyclobutene (41%) and 1,3-butadiene (39%) (equation 109) . [Pg.845]

AhydH was measured in diethyl carbitol. More than one equivalent of H2 was taken up. The value given is per mol of H2. [Pg.43]

Ahy(,// was measured in diethyl carbitol. An estimated resonance energy of 13 kcal mol T is discussed. [Pg.76]

Diethyl ether is usually used as solvent for the reduction, often tetrahydro-furan, more rarely dibutyl ether, diethylene glycol diethyl ether (Diethyl-carbitol), or diethylene glycol dibutyl ether (Dibutylcarbitol).341 4-Ethyl-morpholine is very suitable but is difficult to purify.342 Pyridine has also proved a valuable solvent.343 Solutions of the hydride in solvents other than ether are often prepared by adding the solvent to an ethereal solution of the hydride and then evaporating off the ether. All solvents used must be carefully purified.3443... [Pg.52]
