Digestive poisons

Each category has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Digestive poisons present a lower environmental hazard than nerve poisons, but are not as effective against some pests such as the brown honse moth. Nerve poisons are nsnally more rapidly biodegraded than digestive poisons, but also exhibit less durability. 

Digestive poisons used as insect resist finishes. 

Digestive poisons were the first durable insect resist finishes to be commercialised. Early products were based on chlorinated triphenylmethanes (Fig. 16.1a) and chlorphenylids (Fig. 16.1b). Later, sulcofenurons (Fig. 16.1c) and flucofenurons (Fig. 16.Id) were introduced. These compounds could, for the most part, exhaust to wool under acidic conditions and have reasonable fastness properties. 

Because of the risk of lead poisoning, the exposure of children to lead-based paint is a significant public health concern. The first step in the quantitative analysis of lead in dried paint chips is to dissolve the sample. Corl evaluated several dissolution techniques. " In this study, samples of paint were collected and pulverized with a Pyrex mortar and pestle. Replicate portions of the powdered paint were then taken for analysis. Results for an unknown paint sample and for a standard reference material, in which dissolution was accomplished by a 4-6-h digestion with HNO3 on a hot plate, are shown in the following table. 

Koelsch (Ref 16), based on observation of 1200 workers engaged in handling PA, described the symptoms of poisoning as follows a yellow coloration of unprotected parts of the skin and hair, irritation of the mucous membranes and of the upper parts,of the respiratory tract and the digestive tract. In addition, a constant bitter taste and a lack of appetite appear... 

Antiflatulents are used for die relief of painful symptoms of excess gas in the digestive tract. These drugs are useful as adjunctive treatment of any condition in which gas retention may be a problem (ie, postoperative gaseous distention, air swallowing, dyspepsia, peptic ulcer, irritable colon, or diverticulosis). In addition to its use for tiie relief of intestinal gas, charcoal may be used in the prevention of nonspecific pruritus associated with kidney dialysis treatment and as an antidote in poisoning. Simethicone is in some antacid products, such as Mylanta liquid and Di-Gel liquid. 

One more example of acute polychlorpinen poisoning occurred in the Ukraine around 1969-70, when 27 women aged 26-49 were sent out to sow collective farm fields three days after the fields had been treated with polychlorpinen. A warm rain washed the pesticide from the soil, and the pesticide evaporated intensively. All the women showed symptoms of acute poisoning 20-40 minutes later eight lost consciousness, and nine had fits. The poisoned women spent from 3-25 days in the regional hospital, after which they all went to the VNIIGINTOKS clinic with disruptions of the neural and cardio-vascular systems, as well as of the digestive tract over the next 9-13 months [43]. 

The follicles are green, pungent, and used as pepper. The fruits are eaten to promote digestion, as tonic, to counteract poisoning, treat sunstroke, diarrhoea, leucorrhea, and...
