Digestion promotion

Bing Lang [Arecae semen) Promotes Qi movement and digestion, promotes bowel movement. [Pg.403]

Thymus vulgaris L. (Thyme) The main component of the essential oil (2.3 %) of partially dried leaves of thyme grown in Kenya was thymol. Thyme oil from other countries is reported to contain thymol (up to 85%) and p-cymene (up to 45%). Thyme is used as a spice due to its apetite stimulating and digestion promotion properties. The oil has strong antimicrobial activity and is also used in the liqueur industiy and as a perfume in soaps, deodorants and hair lotions (34). [Pg.503]

Digestion is the process of allowing a precipitate to stand in contact with the mother liquor for some period of time, usually with heating. Digestion promotes slow recrystallization of the precipitate. Particle size increases and impurities tend to be expelled from the crystal. [Pg.152]

The salts of the bile acids are the digestion-promoting constituents of bile. They are surface active agents this means that they lower surface tension and thus can emulsify fats. They also activate lipases. The bile acids, for these reasons, play a leading role in the digestion and absorption of fats. [Pg.244]

Decahn ring systems appear as structural units m a large number of naturally occur ring substances particularly the steroids Cholic acid for example a steroid present m bile that promotes digestion incorporates as decahn and trans decahn units into a rather complex tetracyclic structure... [Pg.131]

Fiber components are the principal energy source for colonic bacteria with a further contribution from digestive tract mucosal polysaccharides. Rate of fermentation varies with the chemical nature of the fiber components. Short-chain fatty acids generated by bacterial action are partiaUy absorbed through the colon waU and provide a supplementary energy source to the host. Therefore, dietary fiber is partiaUy caloric. The short-chain fatty acids also promote reabsorption of sodium and water from the colon and stimulate colonic blood flow and pancreatic secretions. Butyrate has added health benefits. Butyric acid is the preferred energy source for the colonocytes and has been shown to promote normal colonic epitheUal ceU differentiation. Butyric acid may inhibit colonic polyps and tumors. The relationships of intestinal microflora to health and disease have been reviewed (10). [Pg.70]

Urea Enzymatic Dialysis Method. This method (16) uses 8 M urea [57-13-6] to gelatinize and facUitate removal of starch and promote extraction of the soluble fiber at mild (50°C) temperatures. EoUowing digestion with heat-stable a-amylase and protease, IDE is isolated by filtration or I DE is obtained after ethanol precipitation. Values for I DE are comparable to those obtained by the methods described eadier, and this method is less time-consuming than are the two AO AC-approved methods. Corrections for protein are required as in the AO AC methods. [Pg.71]

Messenger RNAs exist in the cytoplasm as ribonu-cleoprotein particles (RNPs). Some of these proteins protect the mRNA from digestion by nucleases, while others may under certain conditions promote nuclease attack. It is thought that mRNAs are stabihzed or destabilized by the interaction of proteins with these various structures or sequences. Certain effectors, such as hormones, may regulate mRNA stability by increasing or decreasing the amount of these proteins. [Pg.394]

In China, the seeds are eaten to promote digestion and treat cough and bronchitis. In Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, a decoction of the plant is used to treat mental disorders such as hysteria and forgetfulness. In Taiwan, the plant is used to treat athlete s foot and other skin diseases. [Pg.58]
