Digestive complaints

One of the most important uses of many native aromatic plants in popular medicine is for digestive complaints [216]. Some studies suggest that EOs are responsible, at least in part, for the digestive activities of this group of plants, although it is also possible that other components (e.g. caffeic acid esters) also contribute to this activity [217, 218]. [Pg.94]

The patient was basically amenorrheic, having only 1 or 2 menses a year. She also experienced mild constipation, frequent gas and bloating, acne, and increasing facial hair. Oral contraceptives had been used in the past and were effective in inducing regular menstrual cycles, but amenorrhea returned as soon as they were discontinued. Birth control pills also made the acne and digestive complaints worse and obviously were not an option for promoting fertility. [Pg.92]

When these drugs are administered in doses that have similar antirheumatic strengths, the general incidence of adverse reactions with prednisone and prednisolone is about the same as that with hydrocortisone. The compounds differ, however, in their tendencies to induce individual side effects. The incidence and degree of salt and water retention and blood pressure elevation are less with the A -corticoids. Conversely, these analogues are more likely to promote digestive complaints, peptic ulcer, vasomotor symptoms, and cutaneous ecchymosis. [Pg.1348]

Constipation is a common problem in infants and children and accounts for approximately 3% of visits to paediatric outpatients (Loening-Baucke 1993) it is also likely that constipation is the most common digestive complaint outnumbering all other chronic gastrointestinal conditions (Mezwa et al. 1993). [Pg.203]

It is a mild herb that has been used for children s complaints. Folklore German chamomile is used in toiletry and cosmetic preparations as a hair conditioner and lightener (Bown, 2003 British Herbal Medicine Association, 1983 Graenwald et al, 2002 Hutchens, 1973 Shealy, 1998 Tierra, 1998). [Pg.323]

Golden Seal has proved itself to be a very valuable remedy in digestive disorders and in debilitated conditions of mucous membranes. Its use is indicated in various gastric complaints, and it may be taken with advantage by most dyspeptics in doses of 10 grains of the powdered root. [Pg.48]

The essential oil has many beneficial effects and applications in aromatherapy for skin and hair care, as an antirheumatic, antispasmodic and calmative, for complaints of the respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems and for nervous disorders. The camphor type is best suited to the musculoskeletal system, and the 1,8-cineole for pulmonary congestion and efficient functioning of the liver and kidneys, with the verbenone being a safe nonirritant essential oil for skin and hair treatments. [Pg.145]

Protein purifiers often liven up their coffee breaks with complaints about the disappearing activity of their protein. The activity disappears because of irreversible adsorption of protein to the column materials, proteolytic digestion, and/or unstable conformation. Cofactors are treacherous—of whose existence the experimenter has no idea but that are nevertheless important for the stability of the protein and that get lost during the purification. The existence of a low molecular cofactor may be suspected if the protein is stable in the raw cell or membrane extract but loses—activity during dialysis against extraction buffer. [Pg.110]

By far the most common health-related complaint made by shiftworkers is disrupted appetite and digestion. It should perhaps come as no surprise that appetite is closely linked to circadian rhythm, thus disrupting one is likely to disrupt the other. Monk and Folkard (1992) stated Expert opinion is virtually unanimous in asserting that, apart from the sleep disorders, ulcers and other forms of gastrointestinal dysfunction are the most likely health consequences of shiftwork (p. 36). Healthy eating education and the availability of healthy meal choices are often recommended as a two pronged approach to dealing with this problem. [Pg.232]
