The operational characteristics of the optimal PV-hydrogen system configuration are demonstrated in Table 5.4. As can be derived from this table, the hydrogen-based autonomous power system produces 39,347 kWh per year, with photovoltaics producing the highest fiaction of this amount (around 72%). As expected the renewable energy fraction of energy produced from this system is 100% and therefore diesel fiiel consumption and carbon emissions are now eliminated. 

Many gas-fired compressors that pump natural gas through millions of miles of pipelines are also equipped with exhaust catalysts to clean emissions at moderate conditions. Even fast-food restaurants are being equipped with catalysts to eliminate odors from the cooking process. The most widely used treatment of exhaust pollutants is that of the catalytic converter present in the exhaust manifold that cleans emissions from the internal combustion engines of gasoline- and diesel-fiieled automobiles and trucks. As modem commercial passenger jets fly above 30,000 feet there is a need to destroy the few ppm ozone that enters the airplane with make-up air to ensure passenger and crew comfort and safety. Figure 11 shows a typical result for the S02-reduction when CEB (corresponding with Ca S = 1) is injected in the flame of the diesel/fiiel oil mixture. On the average, the sulphur reduction was 55 to 60%. This relatively low value is due to the high fuel and air flows (leading to a short residence time of approx. 1.35 s), and the low Ca S ratio. In real practice, however, residence times of several seconds are more realistic. The fluctuation in the results shown is due to the inevitable pulsation of the CEB flow rate. 

With this calibration, gasoline, furnace oil, and diesel fiiel samples were analyzed in duplicate. Table 5 shows elements detected in these samples. The minimum detection limits for the analytes (elements) were determined at 100-fold dilution and are shown in Table 4 above. 

Other biofuels that are also becoming a major part of the world economy include biodiesel, a substitute for petroleum-derived diesel fiieL Biodiesel is typically produced from crops that have a high oil content, such as soyheans and canola. It can also he produced from animal fats and v te v etahle oil fiom the food and restaurant industry.

At the same time as diesel fuel specifications are tightening, the demand for diesel is growing in Asia as well as in Europe. Although the growth rate for middle distillate in Asia Pacific was relatively stagnant from 1996-1998, it rose to 4.6% in 1999, and future demand in developing Asia is forecast to be 5.1% per year. In the EU, the increase in demand for mid-distillates has been at about 1.2%/armum over the past 5 years. It is predicted that the diesel demand in the EU will increase by 30% over the next 15 years. There is a reduced demand for home heating oil and fuel oil cutter stocks, which can help meet the increased need for diesel, but these lower quality stocks will require severe hydrotreatment to meet the future specifications for diesel fiiel.

Fuel level/power level. Gauges will identify fuel or power levels. Gasoline or diesel fiiel-powered vehicles will have a fuel gauge similar to that of an automobile. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) gauges are a part of propane tanks. Propane tanks are strapped onto the back of a forklift with metal bands and locking devices. If there is a need to connect or disconnect an LPG hose, eye and hand protection must be worn.
