Diamyl ether

Commercial dIamyl ether consists principally of di-n-amyl ether and di-isMmyl ether, with mall percentages of Isomeric amyl ethers and diamylene. It is a colorless to light yellow liquid which is quite stable. It is insoluble in water but soluble in methanol, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, ocetone, aliphatic and aramatic hydrocarbons, fixed ails, oleic and hot stearic acids, hat paraffin and carnauba waxes, the latter twa solidifying when coaled. Unlike the lower aliphotic ethers, it will not dissolve nitrocellulose when admixed with ethanol. However, a mixture af diamyl ether and 20% ethanol will dissolve ethylcellulose.

The potassium salt of the alcoholic amyl ether of this acid, the /2-amyloxypropiomc acid, was electrolyzed by Hamonet.1 It gave about 50 per cent of the theoretical yield of 1.4-butan-dioldiamyl ether (diamyl ether of butylene glycol).

DIAMYL ETHER or DI-n-AMYL ETHER (693-65-2) Forms explosive mixture with air (flash point 134°F/56°C). Reacts violently with strong oxidizers. Ethers can form unstable and explosive peroxides upon standing. 

The vapors from hydrolysis are separated by a train of fractionating columns inito five components (1) unchanged amyl chlorides, which are returned to hydrolysis, (2) amylene, which is later hydrated to amyl idcphol, (3) diamyl ether, (4) amyl alcohol fractions that are cut out for iqiecial uses, and (5) the mixture of amyl alcohols marketed under the trade... 

The aralkyl celluloses, e.g., benzylcellulose and phenylethylcellulose, are made in a similar manner. Their purification may be accomplished by treating the crude alkylation mass with a selective solvent, e.g., propanol or diamyl ether, which removes organic impurities. The granular precipitate is then washed with methanol and finally with water.

Moan and coworkers have reported a series of hematoporphyrin dialkyl ethers 1 (Scheme 2) and observed that the sensitizing efficiency increased with decreasing polarity. Hematoporphyrin diamyl ether was more efficient than HpD and was slightly less effective than Photofrin. Pandey et al. also observed that the di-phytyl ether derivative of hematoporphyrin 2 was nearly as active as Photofrin in vivo. However, the related phytyl ester derivatives 3 and protoporphyrin 4 did not show any photosensitizing activity. A few years later, Woodbum et al. and Reiss and coworkers reported a series of hematoporphyrin derivatives substituted at the 3 and 8 positions (lUPAC nomenclatiue) of the macrocycle with ether, thioether, ester and amino functions 5. Some of these analogues were found to be biologicaly active.
