In 1986 when the oil price crashed to 10 a barrel, operators began to look very hard at the requirements for offshore developments and novel slimline, reduced facilities platforms began to be considered. The reduced capital outlay and early production start up capability, coupled with the added flexibility, ensured that all companies now consider subsea systems as an important field development technique. Although the interest and investment in subsea systems increased dramatically, subsea systems still had to compete with the new generation of platforms, which were becoming lighter and cheaper. [Pg.268]

For homogeneous NDT data and repeatable inspection conditions successful automated interpretation systems can relatively easily be developed. They usually use standard techniques from statistical classification or artificial intelligence. Design of successful automated interpretation systems for heterogeneous data coming form non-repeatable, small volume inspections with little a-priori information about the pieces or constructions to be inspected is far more difficult. Combined Quantum and Molecular Mechanical Simulations. A recentiy developed technique is one wherein a molecular dynamics simulation includes the treatment of some part of the system with a quantum mechanical technique. This approach, QM/MM, is similar to the coupled quantum and molecular mechanical methods introduced by Warshel and Karplus (45) and at the heart of the MMI, MMP2, and MM3 programs by AUinger (60). Others have examined the necessary parameters that should be optimized to make the two-dimensional separation operate within the context of the columns that are chosen for the unique separation applications that are being developed. Recently, it has been possible to grow cells of the human immune system in special mice. These mice carry a genetic defect called severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which leaves them with crippled immune systems, much like those in AIDS patients. Because SCID mice lack functional cellular immunity, it is possible to implant them with human cells without tissue rejection taking place. Researchers have recently developed techniques to implant human fetal tissues containing stem cells for the blood into SCID mice. It is then possible to reconstitute these mice with functional human immune system cells, including T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. They have also found that if these SCID mice are infected by HIV, the virus will establish infection in the human tissue and destroy the T helper lymphocytes, just as it does in humans. Thus, it may be possible to study some of the mechanisms by which HIV attacks the immune system in these mice. In addition, they may be very useful for testing potential antiviral drugs. [Pg.233]

The response of vertebrates to olfactory stimulation is affected by previous experience but behaviour can be specifically affected by odours (pheromones) (4). The olfactory system has been shown to detect specific components within complex mixtures and analytical chemistry techniques have been used to identify these active components (5). We have assessed the application of these methods to the problems of agricultural odours in an attempt to develop techniques applicable to both slurries and air samples. The identification of the odorous components might allow specific treatment methods to be developed. In addition, the designation of a range of indicator compounds might be useful in practice for monitoring abatement of odour nuisances. [Pg.311]
