China White

In 1979-1980, some illegal fentanyl analogues appeared that were being sold as substitutes for heroin on the street. Suddenly, a series of more than a dozen mysterious deaths occurred in southern California. Upon autopsy, the victims strongly looked as if they had overdosed on heroin however, no traces of heroin could be found in their bodies. Later, forensic chemists identified a fentanyl analogue (alpha-methyl-fentanyl) that was present in all of the victims. As it turns out, alpha-methyl-fentanyl was being sold on the streets under the name China White (Figure 7.2), because it resembled (and contained) pure synthetic heroin that was produced in Southeast Asia. 

Figure 7.2 China White powder, shown here, is a synthetic form of heroin that is very pure. China White that was tainted with illegal fentanyl analogues, which are hundreds of times more potent than heroin, caused numerous overdoses in heroin addicts in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The two most common analogs of meperidine used as recreational drugs are l-methyl-4-phenyl-4-propionoxypiperidine (MPPP) and l-[2-phenylethyl]-4-acetyloxypiperdine (PEPAP). These compounds have a number of street names, including new heroin, synthetic heroin, synthetic Demerol, and China White. MPPP and PEPAP have pharmacological effects similar to those of heroin, hut more pronounced, producing a sense of euphoria and release from the real world. MPPP, for example, is three times as potent has heroin. 

In opiate abuse, smack ( junk, jazz, stuff, China white mostly heroin) is self administered by injection ( mainUning ) so as to avoid first-pass metabolism and to achieve a faster rise in brain concentration. Evidently, psychic effects ( kick, buzz, rush ) are especially intense with this route of administration. The user may also resort to other more unusual routes opium can be smoked, and heroin can be taken as snuff (B). 

The various forms of fentanyl can be hundreds of times more powerftil than heroin and its effects are indistinguishable. On the street, fentanyl is known as china white. ...

China white was popular on the West Coast of the United States in the early 1980s and was estimated at 6,000 times the potency of morphine. In the late 1980s, fentanyl was introduced into the club scene in New York, and designer variations were spawned. In the 1990s fentanyl was introduced as a lollipop for young cancer patients to treat their pain and suffering. In this form it entered into all-night raves and club parties.

Some time in 1968, Carter saw his first enzyme variants —beautiful little bands of sky blue on a China white gel (a flat slab of starch gel on a glass plate that had been laid between electrodes), each band at a precise and different position on the gel according to the strain of malaria parasite whose content had been extracted for electrophoretic separation (Carter, 1970). They were the biochemical genetic markers of two strains of Plasmodium berghei yoelii (as then defined), 17X and 33X that Walliker needed in order to be able to analyze a genetic cross between these two parasites.
