Schizophrenia and Depression

The anxiety disorders are common and surprisingly disabling conditions. Studies on the health economics of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder document the cost to the individual and to society. Attention has focused on the major psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia and the dementias. Studies suggest that many anxiety disorders are of early onset and too often chronic they are quite common and impose a heavy burden on society. More studies will be needed to discern the fine grain in the survey material and to identify more precisely the location and type of societal costs. These factors will vary from country to country, from district to district, between men and women and between various age groups. 

In view of these factors, it has been suggested that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acid in the diet will decrease the concentration of these fatty acids available for synthesis of the required phospholipids in the body, including the brain. If this was a chronic deficiency it could increase the risk of development of some disorders, including depression, schizophrenia and attention deficit syndrome. There is some evidence that this is the case. 

The three disorders depression, schizophrenia and dementia are discussed in relation to the possible involvement of omega-3 fatty acids in these diseases, that is a deficiency may be involved in the aetiology of these diseases. 

Whereas many metabolic defects affect only a small number of individuals, emotional illnesses including depression, schizophrenia, and other affective disorders at one time or another afflict a large fraction of the population. Autism affects thousands of children.1055 Parkinson disease and Alzheimer disease are just two of a number of degenerative neural diseases attacking older people. Less commonly, young persons contact multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy, which is often a disease of neuromuscular junctions.

Results obtained from studies in gene-targeted mice indicate that ligands which selectively activate or inhibit single muscarinic receptor subtypes may be beneficial for the treatment of a number of diseases including, e.g., Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease, depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. 

The breadth, scope, and novel methodology of STARED, CATIE, and STEP-BD are expected to have a huge influence on the way medications are used for the treatment of depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder and, by extension, to the overall attitude with which both patients and clinicians approach the treatment of psychiatric disorders. 

Symptoms of essential fatty acid deficiency may include fatigue, skin problems, immune weakness, gastrointestinal disorders, heart and circulatory problems, growth retardation, and sterility (Belzung et al., 1998). In addition to these symptom conditions, a lack of dietary essential fatty acids has been implicated in the development or aggravation of breast cancer, prostate cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, preeclampsia, depression, schizophrenia, and ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). The list is neither exhaustive nor conclusive. 

In most people s jargon, biochips are not confined to microfluidics. Among many other roles, microfludics adapted from MicroLab technology can be extended for implants to deliver neurotransmitters or inhibitors in Parkinsonism, depression, schizophrenia, and so on, in a targeted and still microfluidic way without need for clumsy and not-so-effective oral administration.
