Whereas many metabolic defects affect only a small number of individuals, emotional illnesses including depression, schizophrenia, and other affective disorders at one time or another afflict a large fraction of the population. Autism affects thousands of children.1055 Parkinson disease and Alzheimer disease are just two of a number of degenerative neural diseases attacking older people. Less commonly, young persons contact multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy, which is often a disease of neuromuscular junctions.

Most effective differentiation of the receptor between substrates will occur when multiple interactions are involved in the recognition process. The more binding regions (contact area) present, the stronger and more selective will be the recognition (17). This is the case for receptor molecules that contain intramolecular cavities, clefts or pockets into which the substrate may fit (Fig. 1). 

The need for a continuous countercurrent process arises because the selectivity of available adsorbents in a number of commercially important separations is not high. In the -xylene system, for instance, if the Hquid around the adsorbent particles contains 1% -xylene, the Hquid in the pores contains about 2% xylene at equiHbrium. Therefore, one stage of contacting cannot provide a good separation, and multistage contacting must be provided in the same way that multiple trays are required in fractionating materials with relatively low volatiHties.

Latexes of synthetic resins are identified by ir spectrometry. Selective extraction with organic solvents is used to obtain purified fractions of the polymers for spectrometric identification. Polymeric films can be identified by the multiple internal reflectance ir technique, if the film is smooth enough to permit intimate contact with the reflectance plate. TAPPI and ASTM procedures have not been written for these instmmental methods, because the interpretation of spectra is not amenable to standardization. 

Dielectrics for Interlevel Wiring and Planarization. When connecting a number of devices to form a circuit it is often necessary to cross wires without actual electrical contact between them. In order to accomplish this multiple levels of wiring separated by dielectric films are necessary. 

Batch-stirred vessels are most often used in treating material with powdered activated carbon (72). The type of carbon, contact time, and amount of carbon vary with the desired degree of purification. The efficiency of activated carbon may be improved by applying continuous, countercurrent carbon—Hquid flow with multiple stages (Fig. 3). Carbon is separated from the Hquid at each stage by settling or filtration. Filter aids such as diatomaceous earth are sometimes used to improve filtration.
