Reaction depression

The corrosion rate is controlled mainly hy cathodic reaction rates. Cathodic Reactions 5.2 and 5.3 are usually much slower than anodic Reaction 5.1. The slower reaction controls the corrosion rate. If water pH is depressed. Reaction 5.3 is favored, speeding attack. If oxygen concentration is high. Reaction 5.2 is aided, also increasing wastage hy a process called depolarization. Depolarization is simply hydrogen-ion removal from solution near the cathode. [Pg.98]

When we began using reserpine at the Maudsley Hospital less than two years ago there were very few reliable accounts of its use in the treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions and almost no controlled clinical studies. Dr D. L. Davies and I therefore conducted a clinical trial on a mixed group of out-patients, the majority of whom were suffering from anxiety and depressive reactions. The patients were given either reserpine, prescribed as Serpasil in a dose of 0.5 mg. by mouth twice daily, or a seemingly identical placebo, for a period of six weeks. The two substances... [Pg.88]

While studies of reactions in supercritical fluids abound, only a few researchers have addressed the fundamental molecular effects that the supercritical fluid solvent has on the reactants and products that can enhance or depress reaction rates. A few measurements of reaction rate constants as a function of pressure do exist. For instance, Paulaitis and Alexander (1987) studied the Diels Alder cycloaddition reaction between maleic anhydride and isoprene in SCF CO2. They observed bimolecular rate constants that increased with increasing pressure above the critical point and finally at high pressures approached the rates observed in high pressure liquid solutions. Johnston and Haynes (1987) found the same trends in the... [Pg.111]

Barbiturates produce forms of central nervous system depression. Reactions to these drags range from mild sedation (producing sleep) to a coma. Doctors may prescribe barbiturates as sedatives to calm patients nerves, reduce tension or help them sleep. The drugs are also used as an anticonvulsant to control epileptic seizures. [Pg.62]

Acylation of the C3 position can also be accomplished with acid chlorides, as illustrated in the synthesis of indole 7.34, a drug for the treatment of depression. Reaction of indole 7.31 with oxalyl chloride affords C3-substituted product 7.32 even though the benzene ring is very electron-rich. Conversion to amide 7.33 is followed by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride which removes both carbonyl groups, affording the target indole 7.34. [Pg.58]

The effect of this structural hybrid formation was an antidepressant drug with tranquilizing and antianxiety properties (59). The drug was most effective in neurotic depressions and of little value in psychotic depressive reactions (59, 85). Its activity range would thus appear to be between imi-pramine and meprobamate (85). Side effects were minimal with this drug and its onset of action occurred within 1 to 2 days (81). Hence, the drug is particularly useful in the treatment of ambulatory patients. [Pg.137]

Sixty-five patients suffering either from neurotic depression or a brief depressive reaction (ICD-9 300.4, 309.0) with an HAMD score between 16 and 20 were included in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial by Schmidt and Sommer [240]. A car-driving experience of at least 10.000 km per year for several years was required for inclusion. The patients were treated with 3 x 300 mg/day of the Hypericum extract LI 160 or received a corresponding number of placebo tablets for 6 weeks. [Pg.705]
